The Surgical Director of the Emory Heart Failure & Transplant Center (HF&T) is a faculty position with Emory University School of Medicine, Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Physician Member of the Emory Clinic. The Surgical Director will report to the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery and lead all aspects of the HF&T Center to maintain and grow the program’s reputation as an international leader in the treatment of heart failure and transplant. The Surgical Director will focus on providing outstanding clinical care, maintaining quality and patient safety, access to and management of clinical trials, developing/refining innovative strategies in the field of heart failure, thoracic transplantation, and ECMO, as well as budgetary oversight and long-term strategic planning efforts of the program.
Clinical Role & Responsibilities:
Serve as a cardiothoracic surgeon for the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery within the Department of Surgery with an active inpatient and outpatient practice, based primarily at Emory University Hospital.
Transition into the role of Surgical Director for the HF&T Center providing clinical oversight and management of the program.
Additional responsibilities will potentially include clinical involvement and leadership role in the Lung Transplant program.

This position involves::
Involve working with human blood, body fluids, tissues, or other potentially infectious materials.
Candidates must be board-certified in Thoracic Surgery by the ABTS and have demonstrated administrative and leadership accomplishments as well as an aptitude for mentoring and staff development. Successful candidates should possess excellent clinical skills and a strong track record in research and teaching as well as an in depth understanding of the practice of academic medicine. Candidates should have scholarly accomplishments in the health sciences, as well as recognition in the field of Cardiothoracic Surgery as evidenced by involvement in clinical societies at a national level. The position includes participation in education efforts for the ACGME-accredited general surgery residency program and the ACGME-accredited Thoracic Surgery residency programs. Eligibility for an academic rank of associate professor or professor is required.

Surgical Directorship Responsibilities:
Responsible for clinical oversight of physician personnel working within the HF&T Center, including, but not limited to, monitoring the availability and quality of the physicians as it relates to surgical procedures, completing routine quality assessment and review processes, and promoting professional growth of HF&T physician and non-physician personnel to optimize the clinical proficiency;
Lead process improvement initiatives to assess and improve the quality and efficiency of the program’s services, including, but not limited to, quality assessment and improvement, utilization review, risk management, cost reduction, and infection control;
Participate in the strategic planning efforts to meet growth targets of the program including, but not limited to, facilities and equipment planning, staffing and resource utilization, marketing and outreach;
Be responsible for development of basic and clinical science program for heart failure and mechanical circulatory support as well as the recruitment of basic and clinical scientists;
Serve as liaison and program ambassador with the referring provider community in addition to growing national program awareness through speaking engagements at conferences and healthcare publications;
Maintain a robust participation in clinical trials of HF&T therapies in collaboration with industry, academic and government partners;
Participate in the development, evaluation, selection and implementation of new products, procedures and programs related to HF&T and monitoring current service modes for their continued medical usefulness and cost effectiveness.
