Emory University Assistant Dean of Academic Advising in atlanta, Georgia



The Assistant Dean of Academic Advising is part of the Office for Undergraduate Education in Emory College of Arts and Sciences.

  • Responsible for overseeing programs providing academic advising and support to undergraduate students, working with students and faculty on issues affecting students' academic performance, and serving as a College liaison to other University offices, including the Office of Access, Disability Services and Resources, the Counseling Center, and Student Intervention Services.

  • Supports the faculty Committee on Academic Standards and co-chairs a weekly meeting of University offices on students in crisis.

  • Oversees a group of twelve staff, including five direct reports.

  • Though faculty members serve as the primary academic advisors of students, the dean manages a group of professional advisors whose work supplements and supports faculty advising.

  • In collaboration with staff, manages proactive advising programs for students on probation, students returning from exclusion or leave, and other at-risk students.

  • Oversees staff for programs providing peer tutoring, academic coaching and supplemental instruction for students. Responsible for managing the budgets of these academic support programs.

  • The Assistant Dean of Academic Advising is part of a leadership team in the Office for Undergraduate Education which includes four assistant and associate deans and the Senior Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education.

  • This group is responsible for supporting student academic success and partnering with faculty to offer academic programs and services.

  • The Office for Undergraduate Education supports and advises the Dean of Emory College of Arts and Sciences on issues related to undergraduate education.

  • Performs other related duties as required.


  • A PhD or a comparable terminal degree is required, and three years of administrative experience in a university setting, preferably in an academic affairs office, is essential.

  • Experience supervising and mentoring staff is helpful.

  • Candidates must have an interest and record of supporting and mentoring students, and experience supporting student success.

  • A background in counseling, educational psychology or comparable experience is helpful but not required.
