Emory University Assistant Director, International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) in Atlanta, Georgia
Assistant Director, International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) collaborates with Associate Director to design and deliver internal training programs for staff in International Student and Scholar Services.
Serves as a back-up for Associate Director for immigration policy and procedural matters, handling complex cases, as well as answering questions from advisors and staff.
Analyzes and makes recommendations regarding government rules and trends affecting Emory's international students and scholars.
Analyzes, evaluates, and implements business process improvements to enhance operational efficiency and customer service.
Prepares operational and statistical reports for government agencies, educational institutes, and to support departmental objectives.
May supervise staff and/or student workers. Participates in the development of the department strategic plan, the development and implementation of programs, and monitors progress toward achievement.
Advises international students, scholars, faculty, their dependents, administrators, and staff regarding federal immigration and employment regulations, Emory resources, and related matters.
Advises Emory units on recruiting, hosting or hiring, and maintaining the status of foreign nationals on F-1, J-1, H-1B, E-3, O-1, TN, etc.
Advises international students, scholars, faculty, administrators, and staff regarding federal immigration and employment regulations, as well as Emory resources.
Administers F and J programs as Designated School Official (DSO or PDSO) and Alternate/Responsible Officer (ARO or RO).
Represents Emory University in petitions, applications and/or communications with federal, state, and local agencies, including but not limited to the Department of Homeland Security, Department of Labor, Department of State, Georgia Department of Driver Services, and Social Security Administration, etc.
Creates, develops, and implements services, workshops, and programming for international students, scholars, employees, and hiring/hosting departments.
Works in cooperation with other units to coordinate support for international students and scholars.
Works with academic departments and other units at the university to support projects relevant to institutional internationalization and global strategy.
Performs related responsibilities as required.
Bachelor's degree in a related field and four years of directly related experience, preferably in a leadership role. Master's degree preferred.
Expertise and extensive experience handling H-1B and other employment-based categories as well as training fellow advisors and immigration professionals.
Must be able to serve as a Principal/Designated School Official (PDSO or DSO) and Alternate/Responsible Officer (RO or ARO) and meet government eligibility requirements.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including demonstrated ability to communicate and interact effectively with individuals from a wide range of cultural backgrounds.
Excellent project management skills, as well as administrative and organizational skills, including the ability to multitask and to consistently meet deadlines.
Preferred qualifications include supervisory experience in an international office; the ability to lead an increasingly technology-oriented office, including knowledge of Sunapsis; a proven record of business process and customer service improvements, including utilizing technology to improve operational efficiency and business processes; experience handling O-1, Conrad Waiver, and PR cases; and experience living, studying, or working in a country different from one's own.
