Reporting to the Vice President for Government and Community Affairs, the Assistant Vice President for Community Affairs leads Emory's efforts to build strong, supportive partnerships with local government leaders and community organizations government throughout Metro Atlanta.

Is accountable for identifying, creating, and nurturing opportunities for strategic outreach and engagement with the city of Atlanta, DeKalb County and other local governments, local and state agencies, and state and national organizations.


  • Advances Emory's contribution, presence, and recognition as a higher education partner in the community; participates in important Atlanta metro area civic and cultural organizations.

  • Builds internal capability to implement mission-aligned community engagement activities that demonstrate impact and are sustainable as well as highlights that impact through marketing and storytelling.

  • Initiates and maintains relationships and connections that have potential for collaboration and engagement, and, using knowledge about Emory's interest, resources, and strategies, examines avenues for fulfillment of these relationships and connections.

  • Creates and implements programming for strategically advancing Emory's relationship with Metro Atlanta; works with Atlanta Regional organizations to bring public-facing programming to the Emory campus; seeks and identifies opportunities to further Emory's identity as an asset to the metro-Atlanta community.

  • Advises and guides Emory leadership to be best positioned to engage with appropriate municipal governance and business leadership in a manner that results in Emory input, consideration of Emory's interest, use of Emory's physical, intellectual and academic resources and opportunities for contribution.

  • Collaborates with Emory's other community leaders; may represent Emory in Atlanta area civic and cultural organizations.

  • Acts as an Emory contact for Atlanta area government, civic, cultural and non-profit entities.

  • Works closely with all internal community engagement practitioners who engage with students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

  • Supports community healthcare activities in collaboration with Emory Healthcare.

  • Supports the strategic initiatives of the Presidential Leadership Team members.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required.


  • Bachelor's degree and 10 years of experience in local government affairs as well as community engagement and partnership development work.

  • A master's degree is preferred.

  • Strong collaboration skills and ability to build consensus and influence in groups with diverse interests both within the Emory enterprise and throughout the broader Atlanta Community.

  • Functions as a strategic thinker who can connect unit/school/center level programmatic activities to the broader university commitment to be engagement in Atlanta.

  • An understanding of the role of the university in the economic development of the community in which it operates.

NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home regularly but must be able to commute to Emory University on a flexible weekly schedule based upon business needs. Schedule is based on agreed upon guidelines of department of work. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
