General Description & Expectations :
Provide comprehensive care for patients suffering from obesity through medical, lifestyle/behavioral, and surgical services including the expansion of existing and/or new services to support the care of these patients.
Provide care in an evidence-based manner rather than based on personal beliefs, preferences, or anecdotal experience
Be well-versed on indications, usage, and monitoring as it relates to the evolving landscape of anti-obesity medications
Be comfortable working with an interdisciplinary team consisting of Bariatric Surgeons, Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), Registered Nurses, Registered Dietitians, Medical Assistants, Psychologist(s), and Administrative staff.
Serve as an attending Obesity Medicine specialist at any of the Emory Bariatric Center hospital sites as deemed necessary by the Section leader over time
Support the requirements of comprehensive MBSAQIP center(s) with Obesity Medicine and/or Adolescent designations
Clinical Duties :
See new and established (follow-up) consultations for medical weight loss patients
Provide obesity screening/prevention and assessment of obesity-related/metabolic conditions through Body Composition/Metabolic Assessment, Diet and Physical Activity Measurement, Behavioral assessment and Obesity phenotypes
Provide individual clinical management (evaluation, diagnosis, treatment) of specific obesity-related/metabolic conditions
Provide a multidisciplinary and comprehensive approach to obesity treatment with nutritional/behavioral therapy, pharmacotherapy, surgical referrals, and/or leveraging partnerships with other specialties (eg, Sleep medicine, Cardiology)
Provide long-term maintenance therapy for medical weight loss patients to maintain good patient retention and avoid long-term obesity-related complications
Redirect inquiries for those who qualify or have interest in surgical procedures to the Metabolic & Bariatric Surgical (MBS) program
Manage patients who need medical weight loss prior to surgery
Comprehensively manage pre-surgical bariatric patients through a streamlined, evidence based pre-operative process to reduce unnecessary testing, improve efficiency of patient flow through the pre-operative journey, and reduce post-operative complications (This includes but is not limited to universal screening for obstructive sleep apnea, smoking cessation, and/or improved diabetes control in order to optimize post-operative results)
Diagnose and manage MBS complications and foster appropriate communication, interaction, discussion, and/or referrals with the surgical team when appropriate
Manage MBS patients post-operatively with special attention to overall nutrition and micronutrient status, as well as activity and lifestyle habits
Manage patients who have weight regain after surgical weight loss
Mentorship & Academic Duties:
Be able to help mentor, educate, and develop trainees (med students, residents, PA students) clinically through practice-site rotation activities and didactically when they rotate through Obesity Medicine as an elective rotation
Improve trainee and faculty education in the field of Obesity Medicine and Lifestyle Medicine (eg, Grand Rounds, Lunch & Learns, medical and PA school lectures, etc.)
Be actively involved with program outreach both within Emory Healthcare and externally via community channels (eg, presenting at Lunch &Learns, corporate events, Grand Rounds, medical association outreach services, etc.)
Be comfortable with public speaking and telemedicine visits
Participate in the development of unique and collaborative research specific to the care of patients suffering from obesity
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Board certified in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine
Certified or eligible for certification as an Obesity Medicine and/or Lifestyle Medicine physician
A valid, unrestricted medical license to practice medicine in the State of Georgia
A controlled Substance Registration Drug Enforcement Administration Certificate
