Emory Healthcare/Emory University Associate Director of Development - Emory Athletics in Atlanta, Georgia


  • Implements strategies for identifying, cultivating, and successfully soliciting individuals for mid-level gifts to support a department, school, or unit.

  • Solicits gifts in support of the school/unit.

  • Coordinates giving initiatives with central Alumni and Constituent Giving office.

  • Manages a portfolio of prospects through an active schedule of solicitation, cultivation, and stewardship calls to annual donors and new prospects.

  • Builds relationships with current and prospective donors, alumni, and volunteers to support programs and priorities.

  • May ensure the processing of gifts.

  • Liaises with central advancement offices to monitor status of the qualification, cultivation, and stewardship of prospects to build a pipeline toward major gifts.

  • Writes and edits communication materials directed at donors.

  • Develops strategies for marketing new and existing programs.

  • Maintains information on selected donors and prospects including contact reports in CRM system.

  • Communicates in ways that are donor-centric, while furthering the mission of Emory.

  • Travels to meet with donors as needed.

  • May manage a program/event budget.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required.


  • A bachelor's degree and three years of experience in higher education, development, fundraising, OR related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Additional Details

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintains a portfolio of leadership and annual fund prospects in the $25,000-99,000 range. Conduct/coordinate personal calls to retain and grow annual gifts.

  • Work with appropriate staff to identify potential sources of private gift support and recommend appropriate strategies and programs to generate gifts.

  • Plans and implements the Emory Athletics annual giving program. Manages donor acquisition and renewal processes.

  • Establishes goals for the annual fund campaign and creates new fundraising initiatives as appropriate. Uses metrics to analyze and improve annual giving program. Adjusts plan as needed.

  • Solicits donors for leadership gifts to the annual fund and specific initiatives that aligns with our Campus Life and Athletics goals.

  • Works closely with the Senior Director of Development to strategically implement a Friends of Athletics groups.

  • Plan and implement programs that raise awareness, inform and cultivate individuals with the capability of making gifts; move solicitation of gifts forward according to readiness.

  • Closely monitor progress and adjust strategies as needed to meet or exceed goals.

  • Travel as needed to meet with prospects. As appropriate, staff Emory, Campus Life and Athletics events, and/or volunteers on cultivation or solicitation calls.

  • Coordinates with Athletic coaches on best practices and tactics to increase annual support.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and persuasively, orally and in writing, as well as a highly developed sense of propriety in dealing with sensitive information.

  • Proven ability to successfully solicit gifts.

  • Ability to identify and cultivate prospects and manage an individual prospect portfolio.

  • Ability to plan and implement programs focused on building internal and external relationships.

  • Demonstrated ability to think creatively and to employ an entrepreneurial approach.

  • Ability to manage a variety of programs and activities simultaneously and to promote a spirit of teamwork among individuals from various units to pursue common goals.

  • Willingness and flexibility to travel.

  • Knowledge of development principles, solicitation and volunteer recruitment techniques, and a strong commitment to the principles of teamwork and shared responsibility for success.

  • Bachelor's degree required.

  • Five years or more of successful fundraising or related experience, preferably fundraising experience within an athletic environment.

  • Interest in DIII athletics and Campus Life organizations.

  • Knowledge of Division III athletics including NCAA guidelines regarding philanthropic support

  • Success in designing, implementing, and administering programs related to fundraising, volunteer management, marketing, or related fields.

  • Ability to work effectively with students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members.

  • Excellent judgement and comfort with an unpredictability.

  • Computer/information management aptitude required and proficiency with personal computers and office software.

  • Willingness to learn new online tools and software is required.

  • Must have the ability to adhere to strict deadlines while managing multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Ability to deal effectively with and represent the University to a wide range of individuals/groups within and outside of Emory University.
