Emory Law has several major projects in the coming years and seeks an Associate Director of Programs to act as Chief of Staff and Advisor to its senior leadership team. Reporting to the dean of the school of law, the Associate Director is the position that ensures Emory Law is making progress towards implementing and meeting its strategic plan, preparing for its next American Bar Association (ABA) accreditation visit, and senior leadership transitions. The position provides timelines and accountability to the senior leadership team as they balance short-, mid-, and long-term goals.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Directs the strategic planning, development, and implementation of program.

  • Collaborates with representatives from private, government, and international agencies.

  • Represents the program in various national and international fora.

  • Conducts research, designs new initiatives, writes publishable articles and papers, collaborates with others, and designs programs.

  • May supervise staff.

  • Performs other related duties as required.

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:

  • Serves as a confidant and advisor to the Dean, acting as a sounding board for ideas.

  • Works at the Dean’s direction to gather materials and to develop responses relating to sensitive and confidential student, faculty, and other matters.

  • Meets or communicates with the Dean (personally, or by electronic means) on at least a daily basis to review priority issues for the Dean's attention and to brief the Dean on key calendar items.

  • Readily accessible to the Dean via text, phone, and email and able to respond on short notice.

  • Assists the Dean by drafting correspondence for review and finalization, to include copy-editing, as needed.

  • Works with the Dean's direct reports to identify and resolve obstacles to the prompt resolution of major issues and decisions of direct interest to the Dean.

  • In the absence of the Dean, communicates regularly with Dean’s direct reports to ensure deliverables meet qualitative and substantive expectations and are in accordance to established timelines.

  • Prepares and/or contributes to the preparation of reports, funding proposals, correspondence, presentations, speeches, and articles needed to support the Dean based on direct understanding of the views and interests of the Dean.

  • Works directly with the Advancement team to guarantee strategic and efficient scheduling of the Dean's time.

  • Collaborates to ensure that the Dean has all materials necessary to support scheduled activities, inclusive of agendas, briefing documents, talking points, presentations, etc.

  • Assists the Dean in ensuring that meetings and events are efficient via their planning and preparation, conduct, and follow-up, which is inclusive of the finalization of meeting minutes (e.g., faculty meeting minutes).

  • Represents and/or accompanies the Dean as requested at school, university, and local corporate/community engagements.

  • May directly supervise administrative assistants and program coordinators depending on institutional needs.

  • Convenes ad hoc committees and special project teams to move targeted strategic initiatives forward; chairs committees as appropriate.

  • Coordinates efforts on ABA accreditation including oversight of informational audits working in conjunction with the appropriate faculty representatives (e.g., Faculty Chair of ABA Site Visit Prep Committee).

  • Oversees the operations and coordinates logistics for the Deans' Office and Dean's Conference room, and other specific spaces.

  • Has direct responsibility for Dean's Office Operating Budget.

  • Serves as the liaison to key University Offices including the Office of the President, the Office of the Provost, University Secretary, and other Deans.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in field related to specific program as indicated and five years program related experience, or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree or Juris Doctor.

  • Seven years of progressively responsible experience in higher education or other complex organization.

  • Knowledge of and commitment to Emory Law’s principles and commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

  • Excellent project management, analytical and research skills.

  • Strong oral, presentation and written communication skills.

  • Proven ability to independently initiate and manage complex projects and to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to adapt to changing demands and re-prioritize as necessary.
