The chosen candidate will partner with Pediatric Research Leadership to serve as the administrative Associate Director of initiatives designed to enhance outreach in research and encourage early career individuals to enter into child health research related careers including broadening career opportunities for underrepresented minority groups and other marginalized communities within the pediatric research and medical fields. This position will report up through the Department of Pediatrics Vice Chairs for Research and will actively partner with Emory University, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), other Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs), and relevant stakeholders to implement strategies fostering equity in training within pediatric research and related fields.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Directs the strategic planning, development, and implementation of program.

• Collaborates with representatives from private, government, and international agencies.

• Represents the program in various national and international fora.

• Conducts research, designs new initiatives, writes publishable articles and papers, collaborates with others, and designs programs.

• May supervise staff.

• Performs other related duties as required.

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:

The responsibilities of the staff Associate Director role will include:

• Pathway Planning Program Implementation: Support the design and implementation of programs, initiatives, and resources aimed at enhancing the training of a diverse array of learners and early career faculty throughout their career trajectories in pediatric research and medicine. Provide support in offering mentorship, training, and professional development opportunities tailored to the needs of individuals facing systemic barriers to pursuing careers in pediatric research and medicine.

• Recruitment and Retention Assistance: Assist in leading efforts to recruit, retain, and support trainees and faculty to increase exposure to pediatric medicine and reduce barriers to entering and succeeding into child health related research careers, including for underrepresented minority individuals and other marginalized communities, thereby contributing to the development of a supportive and inclusive environment conducive to success.

• Strategic Planning Support: Assist in developing and executing strategic plans to increase diversity and inclusion in pediatric research career pathways, ensuring alignment with the goals and values of Emory University, partner institutions, and the NIH.

• Partnership Development: Collaborate to establish and maintain strong partnerships with Emory University organizations, HBCUs, MSIs, and other stakeholders to create equitable access to opportunities in pediatric research. Specific partners include the Emory Undergraduate Pathways Center, pre-med groups at Atlanta area colleges and universities, the Emory SOM Office of Multicultural Affairs, and medical school pediatric interest groups at Emory and Morehouse.

• Grant Writing Assistance: Assist in writing grants to secure extramural funding for program initiatives aimed at increasing the number of individuals from underrepresented groups in STEM fields who continue in research and research-related careers. Collaborate with stakeholders to develop grant proposals that build on the success of existing programs and leverage support from multiple units at Emory University.

• Data Analysis and Reporting Assistance: Collaborate on collecting, analyzing, and reporting data related to diversity and inclusion efforts in pediatric research career pathways, utilizing metrics to track progress and identify areas for improvement, with a specific focus on underrepresented minority groups and other marginalized communities.

• Academic Community Outreach: Assist in serving as an advocate for equitable access to opportunities in pediatric research and medicine, both internally within Emory University and externally within the broader academic and research communities. Work to engage with local communities, organizations, and professional networks to raise awareness of pediatric research career opportunities and promote diversity and inclusion within the field, with a specific focus on recruitment of trainees with diverse backgrounds (both diverse in terms of subspecialty as well as underrepresented minorities in medicine).

• Pediatric Research Center Liaison: Serve as a liaison to pediatric research centers to support them in their health equity initiatives and community-based, research-related outreach efforts, fostering collaborations that promote efforts to ensure a dedicated cadre of physicians/physician scientists that link high impact child health research to clinical care for children.

• Event Management: Manage events for the program, including workshops, seminars, and networking opportunities, to facilitate community building and professional development for program participants.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's degree in field related to specific program as indicated and five years program related experience, or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

• Master's degree preferred.

NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home regularly but must be able to commute to Emory University on a flexible weekly schedule based upon business needs. Schedule is based on agreed upon guidelines of department. This role requires residency in the state of GA. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
