JOB DESCRIPTION: Provides internal and external leadership in communication and public relations for the School of Nursing (SON). Identifies SON's overall target audience and shapes consistent messages to its internal and external stakeholders and partners. Develops short-term to long-term goals designed to enhance the school's image. Works with leadership to effectively enhance the visibility of the school's academic programs and continuously improve the school's core brand attributes. Develops a strategic plan for utilizing all communication tools and media platforms. Collaborates with internal and external consultants to develop metrics to assess the effectiveness of SON's public relations endeavors. Manages outsourced marketing across all communication delivery channels. Establishes and implements effective strategies to ensure the right messaging reaches faculty, staff, students, and alumni, thereby increasing the effectiveness of communications across the entire school. Develops and administers internal and external communication metrics and feedback systems for continuous improvement. Functions as the primary spokesperson for SON. Serves on or leads various school- or university-wide committees, advisory groups, taskforces, or projects, as appropriate. Undertakes research for special projects relevant to communication and public relations. Hires, supervises, and evaluates staff. Performs related responsibilities as required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, marketing or a related field and seven years of related experience, including management-level experience in marketing, communications, or public relations. An advanced degree and experience working in a university environment preferred.

Reporting to the School’s Chief Operating Officer, the Assistant Dean for Communications and Marketing will launch and oversee major initiatives to bolster the School's reputation, garner national and international visibility, and use marketing strategies to generate revenue to advance the mission of the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing. Working in partnership with the University’s Office of Communications and Public Affairs and the Woodruff Health Sciences Center Communications Office, the Assistant Dean will create communications and marketing plans to enhance the School’s brand position, enhance student recruitment, lead experiential events, encourage alumni engagement and philanthropic support. In collaboration with the school’s leadership team, the Assistant Dean will also lead efforts to promote enrollment in graduate, professional, and non-traditional education programs.

The Assistant Dean will direct the work of the Communications Manager and contractors to ensure collaboration and maximum efficiency. The Assistant Dean will establish annual objectives for staff and the departments, measuring effectiveness against goals.

The Assistant Dean is both a strategic leader and tactical contributor to the School of Nursing. The Assistant Dean actively produces content for School of Nursing websites, publications, social media channels, and other marketing collateral.


Content Development

  • Serves as the school’s chief storyteller by writing effective print, digital, and video communications, including writing, editing, proofreading, design, and photography for the school’s website, social media channels, blogs, newsletters, brochures, magazines, videos, invitations, events programs, letters, awards nominations, reports, proposals, e-communications, press materials, advertising, and other marketing materials

  • Prepares informative materials, scripts, speeches, presentations, and other communications for the school and its leadership team

Digital Communications

  • Maintains the school’s website and various social media platforms

  • Contributes to the content and design of the school’s website and social media including usage analysis, site architecture, information presentation, and SEO

  • Coordinates the school’s video marketing initiatives and dissemination

  • Ability to become knowledgeable in Cascade, the University’s website content management tool

Admissions Marketing

  • Understands the admissions process and can effectively market Emory’s academic programs to prospective students using digital communications—including social media campaigns and email marketing campaigns

  • Develops creative and measurable marketing approaches to attract top students

  • Coordinates promotional items on behalf of the school

Brand Marketing

  • Writes and coordinates awards nominations for faculty, staff, and students for national awards programs to strengthen the school’s reputation

  • Creates targeted, consistent messages to be used across platforms aimed at increasing the brand position of the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing

  • Coordinates influencer campaigns that showcase the School’s many strengths

Marketing Research

  • Has a deep understanding of marketing analytics and can evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of communications and marketing strategies

  • Determines core marketing messages and implements market research

  • Conducts market research, including analysis of peer institutions and surveys of internal audiences, peers and alumni

  • Incorporates metrics into projects and assists in evaluating the effectiveness of all activities, and proposes, revises and oversees activities as necessary to achieve successful efforts

Media Relations

  • Manages media relations for the school to ensure accurate and timely coverage of news, research, and events related to the school.

  • Coordinates media interviews, press releases, news conferences, ceremonies, and other public relations events.

  • Actively pitches stories to media outlets in collaborations with the University’s news team

Special Events

  • Oversees the special events team and coordinates memorable events for students and their families for graduation, awards ceremonies, and pinning ceremonies

  • Coordinates all aspects of planning and executing student recruitment events

  • Assists with other school-based events, as assigned

Development Communications

  • Supports fundraising communications initiatives—including writing content for direct mail campaigns, e-fundraising initiatives, and proposals

Leadership and Project Management

  • Leads day-to-day operations of communications and marketing team

  • Assists the Chief Operating Officer in executing strategic communications initiatives

  • Serves as Project Manager for multiple concurrent marketing projects, including collaboration with faculty and staff, graphic designers, freelance writers and photographers

CRM and Automation

  • Ability to learn and utilize important software packages digital applications including Slate CRM, Survey Monkey, Asana, Delighted, etc. marketing tools Slate, the School’s customer relationship system

  • Automates email and SMS campaigns to prospective students in Slate

Project Management and Collaboration

  • Independently manages projects from inception to completion

  • Serves as the School’s liaison with the Office of Communications and Public Affairs, Woodruff Health Sciences Center Communications Office, Emory Healthcare Marketing, and external vendors including photographers, videographers, writers, etc.

  • Serves as the Co-Chair of the School’s Awards Committee

  • Serves on or leads various school or university-wide committees, advisory groups, taskforces, or projects as appropriate

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, marketing, or a related field and five years of related experience. Experience working in a fast-paced corporate or agency environment is preferred. Candidates with a master’s degree, Accreditation in Public Relations, or Professional Certified Marketer preferred, but not required.
