JOB DESCRIPTION: Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career. The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc. Designs and evaluates experiments. Develops new ideas that promote current research. Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator. May be responsible for operation of specific equipment. May teach techniques to others, train, and supervise research staff. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee. The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available. Appointments cannot exceed five years.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills. The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues. Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.
Ortlund Lab MoTrPAC Postdoctoral Fellow
Seeking a highly motivated individual to contribute to Emory and Georgia Tech’s role in the National Molecular Transducers of Physical Activity Consortium (MoTrPAC). MoTrPAC is a national research consortium designed to discover and perform preliminary characterization of the range of molecular transducers (the "molecular map") that underlie the effects of physical activity in humans. The program's goal is to study the molecular changes that occur during and after exercise and ultimately to advance the understanding of how physical activity improves and preserves health. The six-year program is the largest targeted NIH investment of funds into the mechanisms of how physical activity improves health and prevents disease.
This person will be responsible for leading bioinformatics and statistical analyses of both targeted and untargeted mass spectrometry (lipidomics) data. Specific duties in daily operations may include processing and interpretation of MS spectra, management of large data sets, performing an array of statistical analyses, pathway analysis, and generation of figures & manuscripts for publication.
If inclined, this individual may also develop and implement liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) based methods for targeted and non-targeted lipidomics & metabolomics to support cell culture, animal model and human clinical research.
• High proficiency in R or Python, and be willing to learn xmsPANDA or others
• Ability to manage large ‘omics-based datasets
• Experience in processing targeted and untargeted LC/MS data.
• Have knowledge and experience in relating chemical structures to mass spectrometry data, in methods developed for metabolite identification, and in pathway analysis
• Interest in participating in MoTrPAC consortium meetings at the national level and organizing meetings at the local level.
• Strong organization and communication skills and effective interpersonal skills
• Willing to work in a collaborative environment and be capable of handling multiple tasks while meeting timelines and adapting to changing priorities
• PhD in Biostatistics, Statistics, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry (or related discipline) with a focus on ‘omics research, mass spectrometry, or biostatistics and a proven track record of publications in the field.
