JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Reporting directly to the Biomedical Engineering Department Chair and indirectly to the Coulter foundation leadership team, directs the strategic planning, development and implementation of the Coulter Program.

  • Promotes research translation and engages faculty from clinical departments to collaborate with engineering faculty on projects with a strong likelihood of commercial success.

  • Leads engineering and clinical faculty to develop and present research grant applications to the Oversight Committee (OC) that are translational in nature and can result in new or improved medical products.

  • Works with the project faculty, Chair and OC to ensure the attainment of project goals and critical milestones toward financing and commercialization of products for select projects each year.

  • Acts as a primary conduit for the connection to internal and external commercialization resources that can ensure the success of each project.

  • In conjunction with the Office of Technology Transfer (OTT), provides guidance and oversight to ensure the proper intellectual property strategy is executed for each project.

  • Builds awareness and fosters collaboration among select Schools at Emory University and Georgia Tech.

  • Develops a close working relationship with Coulter Program Directors at selected schools in order to share best practices and identify mutually beneficial resources; initiates and sustains a leadership role for the Program at Universities to ensure the appropriate visibility and sustainability among the administration, faculty, and local economic development resources.

  • Promotes appropriate projects to the angel and venture capital community with the goal of providing financing and commercialization.

  • Prepares quarterly progress reports and presentations to the Foundation and other reporting requirements, as needed.

  • Meets with the University Presidents, Deans of Schools of Engineering and Medicine, and members of the OC to give program updates.

  • Writes and edits communication material (print and web), including annual reports, that provide information to potential investigators (applicants) and corporate/foundation partners.

  • Prepares materials for presentation at meetings of the Coulter Foundation, external advisory board, and other venues.

  • Represents Emory University, the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Coulter Program at local, national, and international Biotech events and conferences.

  • Designs and plans training seminars for faculty to educate them on commercialization of biomedical technology.

  • Collaborates with staff from the Engineering and Medicine Advancement offices to plan and implement fundraising events to help increase awareness of the Coulter program.

  • Works with grant managers in departments that receive awards to create new budgets.

  • Educates investigators and department fiscal/grants staff about reporting requirements and answers questions related to awards and allowable costs.

  • Prepares financial reports and projections for the Chair/PI and Coulter Foundation.

  • Authorizes expenditures on investigator projects (sub-budgets) per established criteria.

  • Participates in professional development opportunities such as classes and conferences.

  • Hires, trains, supervises and evaluates Coulter Program staff.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in a Science or Engineering discipline and three years of life sciences, engineering or other work experience directly related to a translational program.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
