The Chief Counsel for Health Affairs (CCHA) will oversee all legal matters for Emory Healthcare. They also will serve as the primary legal advisor to the CEO, senior management team, Board of Directors, hospitals, and outpatient provider locations.

The CCHA will do the work, manage a team of attorneys and legal professionals, and collaborate with clients and external parties to accomplish Emory Healthcare's objectives. The successful candidate will be an accomplished, mission-driven, and emotionally intelligent leader. They will have strong executive presence, excellent listening skills, and the ability to maintain calm under pressure. They will have an outstanding reputation and will be immediately credible both internally and externally. Acting with the highest ethics and integrity, this individual will bring impeccable judgment and will work in the pursuit of excellence.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school and 20 years of broad-based experience in health care law gained through a combination of law firm and in-house counsel roles at a hospital, health system, or healthcare organization.

  • Active membership in good standing in the bar of any state or territory of the United States or the District of Columbia.

  • Substantial management experience including management of experienced health care attorneys.

  • Strong health care transactional experience, including M&A involving large health care practices, joint ventures, strategic alliances, etc.

  • Experience contracting with a wide variety of health care providers and with provider credentialing.

  • Demonstrated expertise with health care legal and regulatory issues including, but not limited to, the following: the Stark Law, the Anti-Kickback Statute, the False Claims Act, Certificates of Need/Facility Licensure, Managed Care and Value-Based Arrangements, Hospital Authorities, Provider Based Arrangements, 340B Drug Pricing, 501(c)(3) Tax-Exempt Status, Corporate Structure and Governance, EMTALA, Clinical Network Affiliate Arrangements, Clinical Research, Provider Relationships including Compensation Arrangements, Medical Staff Issues and Non Compete Agreements, Patient Care Related Issues, Risk Management, Litigation, and Insurance.

  • Familiarity with health care IT issues, including health care data privacy and data use, health care IT procurement, and telehealth issues.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Significant experience as the General Counsel or Deputy General Counsel (or equivalent) for a health care provider of similar scope to Emory Healthcare.

  • Prior experience serving as the strategic legal advisor to boards of directors and health care committees.

  • A long and successful history of working with senior management of health care organizations, physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals and collaborating with compliance, government affairs, and risk management.

NOTE: Work location: Atlanta, Georgia and will require an in-office presence of at least two days per week and be able to commute to Emory University on a flexible weekly schedule based upon business needs. Schedule is based on agreed upon guidelines of department. This role requires residency in the state of GA. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
