Emory University Director, Application Development and Integration in Atlanta, Georgia
Within Emory University’s Library and Information Technology Services (LITS) organization, the Director, Application Development and Integration leads multiple innovative teams to design and implement custom software applications and integrations that support and advance Emory University’s mission. Working with the Deputy Chief Information Officer, fellow leadership and direct reports, the incumbent leads multiple groups of front end and back end application developers, establishes technical patterns and best practices, and matures the LITS Application development and integration programs to deliver quality software applications, software components, and consulting services within the University. The incumbent collaborates with Emory’s world class researchers, physicians, students, and staff to help advance discoveries in health sciences and other disciplines, support the dissemination of knowledge, and improve the education of learners throughout the Emory Community.
The Application Development and Integration group develops and supports custom software applications for research administration processes, investigator-led and program-wide research endeavors, and core functions. Its current portfolio encompasses multiple groups and solutions including the application development/software engineering teams, the integration development team, and the business process management team.
For the application development team, its portfolio comprises approximately 20 custom applications and software components, built on a variety of implementation stacks, notably Java and Rails. These applications range in complexity, require compliance with different regulations and serve the mission of Emory University, such as by:
Supporting faculty and clinical coordinators in tracking subjects enrolled in Emory studies for Brain Health and Cancer Research;
Allowing faculty to request research services available within the Georgia Clinical and Translational Sciences Alliance;
Allowing administrators and faculty to submit and consult key compliance documentation in University systems;
Enabling patients and their family to gain deeper knowledge about their chronic condition and care.
The position also supports Emory’s integration development and its associated framework. Currently, the team follows the OpenEAI service-oriented architecture methodology and includes over 50 web services and integrations to authoritative data sources within Emory including systems supporting people data, class registration and enrollment, identity management, financial transactions, and research.
Also included in the portfolio is the development of workflow and form-based web applications through the use of rapid application development tools, such as Salesforce or a business process management system. To date, Emory has used these platforms to develop systems to help manage the award of pilot grants, sign off on faculty commitments with external agencies, and provide transparency into the clinical trials workflows.
The position provides transformational leadership and sound technical vision for these teams, striving to maintain current knowledge of emerging technologies, defining a business-driven balance between innovation and initiative, while establishing consistency with established practices and patterns to increase quality and reduce time to implementation and provide ongoing support.
The position fosters a collaborative and professional culture within the teams, and strong relationship with partners and stakeholders, helping to influence strategic alignment across organizational silos. The position meets with faculty and staff to help crystalize their thoughts into cost-effective solutions, works with teams to develop technical options and cost estimates, and promotes agile designs to deliver priority functionality to users and incremental enhancements. The position ensures that the implementation of applications complies with architecture and security guidelines in use at Emory and with best practices in the field, and collaborates with other LITS groups to develop and apply new standards and reusable components for new technological frameworks. The position monitors the team’s practices and deliverables through process improvements and professional growth opportunities, assists in solution design and code reviews, and promotes software engineering services and contributions through demonstrations and presentations.
