The Director of Communications will work with The Emory Police Department (EPD). You will be responsible for the development and oversight of Emory Police Department’s (EPD) public information and media relations programs, as well as all services and activities designed to keep the public aware of the police department’s programs and informed of relevant activities.


  • Reviews and develops policy relating to program initiatives and institutes strategic plans.

  • Develops and implements strategies for media relations, publications, and community relations programs in support of image enhancement.

  • Acts as spokesperson for the organization. Develops and oversees communication efforts for specific programs and overall institution building efforts.

  • Manages a budget and a staff.

  • May be responsible for managing various aspects of social media activities.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required.


  • Responsible for review and development of policy relating to program initiatives.

  • Coordinate the development of comprehensive marketing strategies.

  • Assess marketing needs; develop, implement, and manage strategic communication campaigns and projects that reach, inform, and involve campus constituency groups and other targeted audiences.

  • Coordinate with the Chief of Police, Command Staff, and other appropriate agency personnel to develop news releases related to events of public interest. Establish and maintain strong working relationships with the University Office of Communications and Public Affairs, Office of the President, other public safety agency public information officers, as well as key University departments, student groups, and the campus community.

  • Acts as spokesperson for the organization. Position could respond to crime critical law enforcement operational scenes to assist with the dissemination of information to the media. Responsible for creating press releases and responding to questions from the media.

  • Responsible for publicizing, promoting, and marketing the varied programs, events, and incidents using a variety of outlets such as news releases, newsletters, social media, departmental website, brochures, consumer publications, in-house videos, news conferences, community presentations.

  • Performs related duties as assigned.


  • A bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or related field.

  • Seven years of related experience which includes three years in a communications or public relations position.


  • Two years as Public Information Officer, or similar role, with a law enforcement agency.

  • Master’s degree in related field.
