KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reviews and develops policy relating to program initiatives and institutes strategic plans.

  • Develops and implements strategies for media relations, publications, and community relations programs in support of image enhancement.

  • Acts as spokesperson for the organization.

  • Develops and oversees communication efforts for specific programs and overall institution building efforts.

  • Manages a budget and a staff.

  • May be responsible for managing various aspects of social media activities.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:

  • Serves as chief communications officer and chief communications strategist for the Laney Graduate School (LGS).

  • Directs all internal and external communications efforts, and provides communications perspectives on LGS initiatives and strategic planning.

  • Produces executive communications for the Dean of LGS, the Senior Associate Dean, and the LGS Executive Council.

  • Directs the development and implementation of LGS marketing, promotional, and communications strategies and policies to build awareness of LGS initiatives and programs, and to serve LGS communications needs.

  • Evaluates the effectiveness of LGS communication strategies across platforms, including social media, and audiences.

  • Assist with the marketing and promotion.

  • Serves as spokesperson for LGS, as appropriate.

  • Manages a budget and staff.

  • Participates in strategic planning discussions where a communications component is expected, and where strategic communications need design and implementation.

  • Coordinates with University Communications and Public Affairs regarding pertinent University messaging, strategic communications planning, storytelling and content promotion, media relations, and issues requiring management/crisis communications.

  • Directs the development and maintenance of the LGS website and directs LGS social media presence and activity.

  • Serves as principal LGS writer and editor, ensuring that written communications advance LGS strategic goals and reflect the LGS vision and mission.

  • Serves as principal writer for correspondence, speeches, presentations and other executive communications delivered by the LGS Dean.

  • Serves as communications liaison to the LGS Executive Council, ensuring that their deliberations, decisions and policies are articulated effectively and accurately both to LGS constituencies and among LGS staff and partners.

  • Provides leadership for LGS senior staff and constituencies on communications projects, ensuring that communications reflect LGS values, commitments, strategic priorities, principles and policies, and LGS brand standards.

  • Advocates for LGS with University communications to ensure communications products for local and national distribution reflect LGS commitments, strategic priorities, and quality requirements.

  • Develops and maintains relationships with other Emory communicators to share Laney’s strategies and tactics to ensure coordination with other university efforts.

  • Directs interactions with communications vendors and Emory service providers to ensure that reliable and high-quality communications are delivered in a timely and efficient manner.

  • Evaluates the effectiveness of LGS communications strategies, collateral materials, and outreach (may include surveys, focus groups).

  • Supervises communications staff.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Vice Provost for Graduate Affairs and Dean.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or related field.

  • Seven years of related experience which includes three years in a communications or public relations position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Extraordinary attention to detail, and ability to work collaboratively.

  • Flexibility in time sensitive conditions and with dynamic teams.

NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home regularly but must be able to commute to Emory University on a flexible weekly schedule based upon business needs. Schedule is based on agreed upon guidelines of department. This role requires residency in the state of GA. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
