The Associate Managing Director reports to and works in close partnership with the Director/Principal Investigator and the management team to administer this large, technically complex and continuously evolving Center and the Institute. The Associate Managing Director serves as manager and central administrator for the new Institute, acting within the policies and procedures of the Institute, the University and the Beyond CCHF Cooperative Agreement, to achieve Institute Goals. Specific responsibilities include Institute-wide coordination and planning of activities, financial management, budget preparation, facilities support, grant administration, human resources, and general administration. Emory University is the lead institution and the Institute will involve 15-20 other partner universities, and as such, the Associate Managing Director will need to serve as liaison between administrative and research personnel at the various partner institutions.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Directs special projects for a non-central division or department.

  • Manages the strategic planning process and oversees progress toward achieving project goals.

  • Develops and administers project budgets. Participates in the identification of funding sources, initiatives and strategies.

  • Prepares communication documents for articles, reports, and/or presentations. Develops short and long term project goals and objectives.

  • Represents and promotes projects at speaking engagements and with various constituencies.

  • Conducts research, analyzes data and identifies and summarizes trends. Develops and prepares reports.

  • Serves as a liaison with other university departments and represents projects at meetings and events.

  • May hire, supervise, and evaluate staff.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:

  • The Associate Managing Director will support the Managing Director in research, administrative and integrative activities of the NSF Center for Selective C–H Functionalization (CCHF), a National Science Foundation Center for Chemical Innovation, as well as the new Beyond CCHF: The Catalysis Innovation Institute.

  • The Associate Managing Director will interact regularly with the CCHF Managing Director, the Director, the CCHF Governance Committee, and the leadership of the Center Research and Integrative Activities. This may also include individuals not directly involved in the Center/Institute, including the Chairs, financial managers and sponsored program officers of the departments associated with the Center/Institute investigators.

  • The purpose of these contacts will be to support further and review the progress of the Center and the Institute.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor's degree and five years of project management or related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Proficiency with various computer software packages.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters or Ph.D. in Chemistry or related field.

  • Research experience in catalysis or organic synthesis would be beneficial.

  • Experience working in a research setting - academic institution, national laboratory, research institute, and/or startups, etc.

  • Demonstrated project management and business communication skills.

  • Experience in large scale virtual communications and web site management would be beneficial.

  • Knowledge of university-corporate relations, research administration, and finance management would be beneficial.

  • Looking for: ability to problem solve, independence, critical thinking, collaborative, detail-oriented, assertive communication.
