JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Works in partnership with the Associate Vice President for Health Sciences Communications to develop communications goals and strategies.

  • Works to enhance the reputation of the Woodruff Health Sciences Center (WHSC), with the goal of continuing to position Emory University, WHSC, and its strategic partners as a leader in the next phase of health discovery, education and clinical excellence.

  • Provides media training to administrators, physicians, researchers.

  • Works collaboratively with school and department communicators, and subject matter experts to prepare for media interviews, develop press briefings, and create materials for media relations.

  • Collaborates with leadership to drive web and new media strategy, reputation and issues management, as well as support key communications needs regarding government affairs.

  • Contributes to new concept development and oversees content and related multimedia production for delivery through the website for WHSC and the Emory News Center.

  • Works collaboratively with the University media relations team to identify media outlets, develop contacts, and place news, features, and opinion pieces.

  • Provides editorial oversight and manages and edits written materials for the media. Assists in media relations crisis management and contributes to crisis communications plans with the media team.

  • Serves as Woodruff Health Sciences Center's communications liaison with local partnerships and alliances including Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia Research Alliance, etc.

  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with communications peers and works collaboratively to promote joint initiatives and research.

  • Contributes to content and related multimedia production related to areas of research and clinical care.

  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor's degree in public relations, journalism or related field, and five years professional experience in public relations, writing, or editing, OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • The Director, Health Sciences Media Relations, is an accomplished communications professional who executes communications strategies with a deep understanding of large complex academic organizations.

  • Master's degree preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience as a media relations leader, writer and editor.

  • Demonstrated creative communications and business skills.

  • Ability to conceptualize and articulate strategic communications plans with an understanding of the diversity of the internal and external audience.

NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home regularly but must be able to commute to Emory University on a flexible weekly schedule based upon business needs. Schedule is based on agreed upon guidelines of department. This role requires residency in the state of GA. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
