The Georgia Center for Cancer Statistics is a surveillance research center located in the Department of Epidemiology at the Rollins School of Public Health. The center carries out the day-to-day surveillance activities of the Georgia Cancer Registry, provides data for cancer prevention and control planning activities in the state of Georgia, and is a nationwide resource for supporting cancer research studies.

The organization is seeking an Epidemiologist to collaborate on the growth of surveillance activities and the support of cancer epidemiology research projects. The candidate will have the opportunity to work on several collaborative studies of cancer incidence and recurrence, social and health care factors, and molecular factors as they contribute to cancer incidence, outcomes and disparities.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Provides technical and scientific expertise for programs in the areas of communicable disease, chronic disease and environmental epidemiology.

  • Designs, conducts and reports on the epidemiological study of diseases, collects and analyzes data and develops health education materials.

  • Manages and participates in investigations and surveys that have national and international impact.

  • Conducts program research and prepares operational and statistical reports.

  • May write publishable articles and papers.

  • Serves as a liaison to and works with other groups and organizations participating in related programs.

  • May travel internationally to supervise field operations.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:

The candidate is expected to increase their operational, methodological and substantive knowledge of cancer surveillance systems and cancer epidemiology, build skills for developing and leading research studies, and have opportunities to oversee trainee projects. They will perform population health research activities, including developing and implementing research protocols, performing data analyses, preparing manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals, delivering presentations at scientific meetings, assisting in the development of grant proposals, and providing other research and methodological support for existing and ongoing studies. Opportunities to develop and write funding proposals are also available.

The candidate will be under the supervision of Dr. Kevin Ward and will have the opportunity to collaborate with study investigators at Emory School of Public Health, Winship Cancer Institute, and the American Cancer Society.

The candidate will be based at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, with a start date of August 1, 2024. Salary and benefits will be commensurate with experience. The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory, and funds are available.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A doctoral degree in a field related to area of research or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • International travel required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, or other relevant quantitative field

  • Demonstrated knowledge of registry operations and experience working with registry data

  • Expertise in data management and analyses using SAS and R

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to foster a good working relationship with others

  • Demonstrated experience in developing manuscripts for publication

  • Interests: Cancer and social epidemiology, cancer surveillance, administrative health data sets, epidemiologic methods, molecular epidemiology, health equity

NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location. Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
