Fray F. Marshall, MD Endowed Chair in the Department of Urology, Emory University School of Medicine and Scientific Director of the Genito-urinary Oncology Program in Emory’s Winship Cancer Institute
The Department of Urology at Emory University and Winship Cancer Institute (Winship) are seeking applications for the appointment of the inaugural Fray F. Marshall, MD Chair and Scientific Director of Genito-urinary (GU) Oncology in Emory’s Winship Cancer Institute.
The Fray F. Marshall, MD Chair is supported by a substantial endowment honoring Dr. Fray Marshall, esteemed leader in urological oncology who was the inaugural chairman of the Emory Department of Urology from 1998 until his untimely passing in December 2011. Dr. Marshall’s intent was for this endowment to support a leader in translational urological oncology research. Accordingly, the Search Committee is seeking candidates who demonstrate:
The capability to lead a translational research program that aims to transform our understanding of cancer biology and to enable new approaches for prevention, detection or treatment of prostate cancer or other urological malignancies.
A track-record of scientific discovery and accomplishment relevant [hf1] to cancer, prostate cancer, or other urological cancers.
Eligibility for academic appointment as Professor or Associate Professor with tenure at Emory University School of Medicine.
Established excellence in mentorship of trainees or junior faculty.
Ongoing leadership of contemporary scientific investigation and innovation.
Appointment of this position is accompanied by recent and ongoing expansion of Winship Cancer Institute’s research in prostate cancer and Emory’s Department of Urology including the addition of 9 urology faculty over the past 3 years under the leadership of the current Chair of Urology Martin G. Sanda, MD, resulting in doubling of the department’s research funding and major increase in philanthropic and endowment funds and raising Emory Urology’s clinical volume to among the top academic urology programs nationwide. The Fray Marshall Chair will have an opportunity to lead additional tenured or tenure-track research faculty recruitments.
Winship has held NCI designation since 2009 and has recently completed its 5-year competitive renewal process. Winship has four major research programs, 164 core members, and $85 million in annual peer reviewed funding.
Eligible candidates may come from a variety of academic backgrounds - e.g. Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Genetics, Epigenetics, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Molecular Endocrinology, Molecular Epidemiology, Pathology, or other disciplines - that are integral to scientific investigation in urological oncology. Accordingly, candidates suitable for concurrent academic appointment in a basic science department and in Urology are encouraged to apply.
