Emory University Libraries is looking for a Front-End Developer to help initiate and implement creative and impactful uses of technology. Reporting to the Lead Software Engineer in the Library Technology and Digital Strategies department, the Front-End Developer will contribute to the theming, branding and development of interfaces for the libraries’ web sites, discovery products and the institution’s preservation repository.
Coordinates the development and maintenance of interfaces for products and systems that make services and resources accessible and discoverable.
Consults with stakeholders to understand business problems and develop requirements for front-end solutions.
Analyzes and resolves problems resulting from fixes and upgrades. Provides technical direction to customers and mentor’s junior staff.
May lead small projects related to front-end solutions or user interfaces and/or resolve software issues for business related problems.
Performs related responsibilities as required.
Contributes to the design of library systems.
Maintains up-to-date professional knowledge and skills in areas related to primary job assignment as well as maintains general knowledge of current trends in higher education, academic libraries, and information and educational technology.
Assists in developing library applications.
Supports existing applications.
Tests new development.
Identifies training needs.
A bachelor's degree and four years of experience or experience in front-end development, web design, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Positions in this classification may require a knowledge of one or more programming languages and/or a knowledge of an application and application tools.
Experience with Content Management Systems such as Drupal.
Familiarity with Blacklight and/or Samvera Community gems and applications.
Experience working on Open-Source software projects or with remote collaborators.
Familiarity and desire to work with agile methods.
Familiarity with version control, test-driven development, continuous integration techniques and other development best practices.
Experience working in a library environment.
Evidence of capacity for professional development, involvement, and contribution.
Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as analytical and organizational skills.
NOTE: Tasks related to this position can be performed remotely with only occasional supported visits to an Emory University location. Emory reserves the right to change this status with notice to employee.
