JOB DESCRIPTION: Identifies patients alleged to have specific disease diagnoses, confirms the diagnosis clinically or pathologically, and determines whether these patients meet specific criteria for inclusion in a database. Abstracts demographic, diagnostic, and epidemiologic treatment and survival information from inpatient and outpatient reports, records, and electronic databases. Codes the primary site and morphology, and clinically or pathologically stages the morbidity, mortality, or extent of the disease. Follows up with patients, physicians, and clinics to obtain and update missing data. Designs computer programs, and maintains reports. May oversee other medical records abstractors. Performs related responsibilities as required.

The Georgia Cancer Registry (GCR) is recruiting a candidate for an abstracting position in the central cancer registry. This person will perform tasks in the collection and management of cancer data from multiple reporting sources: hospitals, outpatient surgical facilities, laboratories, radiation therapy and medical oncology facilities, hospices, nursing homes, pharmacies and physician offices. The GCR is a statewide registry that participates in both the NCI Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program and the CDC’s National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR).
Determine reportability of incoming records and data feeds
Abstract demographic, diagnostic, and treatment information from all source records
Determine clinical or pathologic stage adhering to NCI SEER CS, EOD, Summary Stage, and AJCC TNM Staging rules
Match incoming data to existing registry records
Performs related responsibilities as required
Certification as a Tumor Registrar
Knowledge and experience with computers
Knowledge of national cancer registry guidelines and proficiency using reference materials
Experience working both independently and as part of a team
Ability to prioritize and manage numerous deadlines
Associate’s degree in nursing or other relevant field which includes two semesters of human anatomy and physiology OR the completion of a two year technical college program approved by the National Cancer Registrars Association.
Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
