The Georgia CTSA Innovation Catalyst program supports investigators with the Georgia CTSA partner institutions by accelerating commercialization. The AppHatchery is an initiative of the Innovation Catalyst program that designs, develops, and studies native mobile apps for clinical and translational research.

The AppHatchery seeks a motivated designer/developer for a 15 week full time summer internship (May 10th – August 20th). Projects are dynamic and work with user groups ranging from Grady trauma patients to the Georgia Department of public health Tuberculosis monitoring team.


  • Provides software development support including the identification and generation of software specifications and the designing, development, implementation and revision of software applications to meet business needs.

  • Supports software applications and associated operating systems.

  • Reviews software specifications, systems, models and coding using analytical and investigative methods and techniques to ensure required specifications meet system needs.

  • Participates in software testing and subsequent modifications.

  • Writes and edits reports to provide recommendations, conclusions and other data.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A bachelor's degree in computer science, math, engineering or a related field and one year of related experience in programming and software systems or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Knowledge of software development in a research institution context preferred.


  • Mobile app development experience

  • Mobile development experience with the following languages: HTML, CSS, JAVA, JSON, Kotlin, PHP, Swift, Objective-C

  • Familiar with the Android SDK and iOS development frameworks

  • Knowledge of SQLite, MySQL or similar database management system

  • Familiar with Android Studio Integrated Development Environment (IDE) and/or Apple Xcode

  • Knowledge of version control using Git and GitHub

  • Mobile App management using Google Firebase including Google Analytics, Crashlytics, and App Distribution

  • Design Experience

  • User research techniques including interviewing, synthesis, and user centered design

  • Wireframe development using Miro, Figma, or other standard tool

  • Usability assessment and evaluation

NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home temporarily during the COVID-19 pandemic, with intent to return to an Emory University location in the future. Emory reserves the right to change this status with notice to employee.
