KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: The primary purpose of the Group Fitness and Instructional Programs Coordinator is to collaborate in the development, administration, and evaluation of instructional group and mobile fitness programs and well-being initiatives for all members of the Emory community based on current research and well-being industry trends. This position has equal programmatic responsibilities at both the Woodruff Physical Education Center (WPEC) and the Student Activity and Academic Center (SAAC) recreational facilities.

Responsibilities include a wide variety of administrative and supervisory duties including, but not limited to, personnel management, fiscal management, strategic planning, professional and student development, risk management, facility management, marketing/promotions, and rules and policy development. This position is a full-time, twelve-month, exempt professional staff member within the Department of Recreation and Wellness and reports to the Assistant Director for Fitness and Wellness.

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:

PROGRAM MANAGEMENT & ADMINISTRATION

  • Identifies, develops, and executes the implementation of high impact programs, special projects, events and other initiatives designed to support and enhance the overall health and well-being of Emory students and community. Assists with the management of a comprehensive fitness program including, but not limited to, group fitness, mobile fitness, wellness programming, special programs, and education workshops.

  • Directs oversight of programming at both the WPEC and the SAAC including hiring, training, and supervision of group fitness staff, oversight of independent contractors, and development and implementation of group and mobile fitness programs, workshops, and other events.

  • Manages the Group Fitness program to include class and instructor scheduling, instructor pay, equipment inventory and maintenance, operating procedures, fitness space upkeep, and other associated duties. Manages the Mobile Fitness program to include outreach, instructor scheduling, payment structuring, and other associated duties. Administers wellness workshops, educational programs, challenges, and special events.

  • Assists with the content management of marketing materials, website and social media platforms to ensure up-to-date and accurate promotion of fitness and wellness programs. Works with the marketing team to coordinate the promotion of group fitness programs. Compiles and maintains semester statistical data for reporting (e.g. participation numbers, fitness studio equipment inventory, etc.).

  • Sets learning outcomes and conducts comprehensive program assessments in specific areas of responsibility to inform program development and implementation. Serves as a department ranking staff member on duty for recreational programs, which includes, but is not limited to, serving as a first responder for emergency situations and providing emergency care, customer service, resolving conflicts, and making decisions and judgments regarding facility usage. Provides input on departmental policy decisions and strategic planning.

  • Maintains current knowledge of recreation and well-being programming trends and challenges within Higher Education. Serves in an on-call function to support athletic and recreation facilities and programs. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends when necessary.

PROFESSIONAL AND STUDENT STAFF DEVELOPMENT

  • Assists in the recruitment, hiring, training, scheduling, evaluation, and mentoring of group fitness and mobile programs staff. Staffs and coordinates supervision for group fitness spaces and mobile programs.

  • Provides managerial and leadership experiences in program operations; creates and promotes continuing education and professional development opportunities for student staff. Develops and implements continuing education and training for fitness and wellness staff.

OUTREACH

  • Assists in collaboration efforts with key campus partners and external organizations to develop a comprehensive, integrated approach to student health and well-being. Develops and manages regular mobile fitness programs across campus, ensuring accessibility, engagement, and opportunity for all members of the Emory community.

  • Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of outreach efforts and program activities, making adjustments as needed. Assists in providing integrated programming with Fitness and Wellness, Intramurals & Club Sports and Outdoor Recreation.

  • Active membership including, but not limited to, presentations, grant proposals, and committee involvement in a variety of on-campus and divisional work teams, and association involvement (e.g., NIRSA, NASPA, ACHA, NASM, etc.).

  • Serves on at least one committee, project team, or program within the Division of Campus Life and/or the University Community. Attends all staff, department, and division meetings as required.

RISK MANAGEMENT

  • Assists with the establishment of risk management policies and trainings for all group and mobile fitness programs. Coordinates with appropriate staff to provide CPR/First Aid/AED certification courses for all fitness and wellness staff.

  • Maintains proper certification and records of group and mobile fitness staff. Instructs CPR/First Aid/AED courses for internal student and professional staff to ensure policy compliance.

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

  • Assists with the preparation, forecasting, and monitoring of all annual income and expense budgets as it relates to group and mobile fitness programs. Maintain records of program participation, revenue generation, and expenditures.

  • Consistently monitors all revenue and expense budgets for group and mobile fitness programs. Monitors and maintains records of program-related equipment inventory and promotional items and coordinate purchases and replacements. Conducts and audits payroll procedures for fitness staff.

FACILITY MANAGEMENT

  • Assist in oversight of fitness areas including policy development and enforcement, staffing, inventory, and equipment purchasing. Coordinates with facilities management staff for facility upkeep and maintenance of spaces. Serves as additional professional staff support in the management of recreational facilities. Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor's degree in recreation, exercise science, exercise physiology, physical education, sports administration, public health, or other related field and one year of experience in fitness and wellness programming and facility management preferably in a university setting, OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • CPR First Aid and AED certification required. A master's degree is preferred.

NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location. Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
