The histology technician will work as part of the Winship Cancer Institute Cancer Tissue & Pathology Shared Resource (CTPSR), a multidisciplinary team focused on providing high quality human biological specimens and histology services to researchers. Must have a working knowledge of general histology principles and be able to perform routine histology services such as processing and embedding tissue, printing slides, sectioning FFPE using a microtome, sectioning frozen tissue using a cryostat, staining slides (automated H&E and manual special stains). May also provide assistance with more advanced histological services such as IHC, multiplex-IHC, whole slide scanning, and TMA construction. Will be responsible for receiving and logging incoming tissue specimens, tracking orders as they move through the lab, and preparing orders for distribution back to the researcher. Cleaning and maintenance of basic histology equipment will be required. CTPSR provides histology services to researchers across Emory University thus demonstrated customer service skills are a plus. In addition, successful candidates will exhibit precise attention to detail, adaptability, professionalism, excellent time-management skills, and the ability to perform well under pressure with a large work volume. Must complete required training modules and perform all work in accordance with standard operating procedures and quality control guidelines. Must conduct and develop interpersonal relationships with professionalism and diplomacy. Must follow the direction of the lab manager and/or directors and maintain communication regarding ongoing activities of the lab.


  • Fixes, embeds, sections, and stains tissue specimens for the establishment and confirmation of patient diagnosis.

  • Performs routine maintenance on departmental equipment.


  • A high school diploma or equivalent. Completion of a one year program in histologic techniques.

  • Certified as a Histology Technician (HT) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or certification eligible.

NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home temporarily during the COVID-19 pandemic, with intent to return to an Emory University location in the future. Emory reserves the right to change this status with notice to employee.
