JOB DESCRIPTION: Function as an expert technical resource, performing complex assays and providing training and mentoring to other HLA staff. Perform standardized and high-complexity histocompatibility testing in one or both disciplines on various types of clinical samples. Tests may include: HLA antibody screen and identification, crossmatching, typing, and engraftment monitoring. Analyze and evaluate results, and generate and evaluate clinical reports. Perform final review of sample processing, test preparation, testing results, and reports generated by staff. Sign out reports to next level review or to physicians. Assist with scheduling and workflow coordination. Serve as expert, technical resource, and/or point person for one or more specialized areas or instruments in the department. Train and supervise other HLA technologist within a laboratory section. Participates in staff management and employee performance. Provides on-going performance feedback and assists with staff training. Participates in workflow management, interviewing and hiring discussions. Review quality assurance and quality control data and take corrective action for assigned area, as needed. Maintain documentation and assure that regulatory requirements are met. Write, review, and edit protocols and procedures; maintain procedure manuals. Oversee completion of equipment maintenance, instrumentation calibration, quality control and documentation, and ensure adequate supply of supplies and equipment. Must be able to take on-call assignments for nights, holidays, and weekends on a rotating basis. Other duties may also be assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in medical technology or a chemical, physical or biological science. Other bachelor's degree will be accepted if graduated from an accredited school of medical technology or if science and math coursework meet requirement of certifying agency. At least four years of HLA experience and either CHT (ABHI) or CHS (ABHI) certification is required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (Medium): 20-50 lbs; 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 11-25 lbs, 34-66% of the workday (frequently); 01-10 lbs, 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 50 lbs max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs; Occasional to frequent standing & walking, Occasional sitting, Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing), Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Factors affecting environment conditions may vary depending on the assigned work area and tasks. Environmental exposures include, but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure Bio-hazardous waste Chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors Communicable diseases Electrical shock, Floor Surfaces, Hot/Cold Temperatures, Indoor/Outdoor conditions, Latex, Lighting, Patient care/handling injuries, Radiation, Shift work, Travel may be required. Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
