Emory Law, a top-tier law school in the thriving city of Atlanta and the home of the Hugh F. MacMillan Law Library, is seeking an enthusiastic, creative, and service-oriented professional to join our team as Law Librarian for Digital Initiatives and Research Services . This is a full-time position, available immediately.
Under the general supervision of the Associate Law Librarian for Research Services, the Law Librarian for Digital Initiatives and Research Services is responsible for the continued development, maintenance, and promotion of Emory Law’s institutional repository, Emory Law Scholarly Commons. This includes representing the MacMillan Law Library on Emory Law’s Institutional Repository Steering Committee as well as leading the development of appropriate policies, procedures, and repository-based services with regard to faculty publications. This position is also part of the Research Services team which provides high-quality legal and non-legal reference assistance to law library users including students, faculty, members of the local bar, and the general public. Such services include providing faculty scholarship support for law faculty, staffing our Hybrid Reference Desk and interacting with a variety of patron groups, providing classroom instruction in a variety of settings, supporting and maintaining Emory Law’s institutional repository, and participating in outreach programs. While there is no definite schedule, we expect that the ratio of work on digital initiatives will gradually decrease over time while that of other reference services, such as providing faculty scholarship support, classroom instruction, and similar duties will increase correspondingly.
Additional Responsibilities include:
Lead MacMillan Law Library’s continued efforts to develop, maintain and promote Emory Law’s institutional repository, Emory Law Scholarly Commons;
Develop and implement appropriate external policies, internal procedures, and other repository-based services;
Collect, analyze and report institutional respository usage data;
Maintain current knowledge of emerging trends and best practices in digital collection management;
Serve as a liaison and/or coordinate collaborative initiatives between MacMillan Law Library, Emory Law, and Emory University to support the scholarly and research activities of Emory Law faculty;
Assist with the management of MacMillan Law Library’s website including maintaining access to Emory Law’s institutional repository;
Support faculty scholarship by participating in the Library’s Faculty Services Program including providing scholarship support and classroom assistance for seminar courses;
Work with a variety of student groups, including faculty research assistants, journal students, law school graduate students, and Emory University students to assist with their library and legal research needs;
Staff the MacMillan Law Library’s Hybrid Reference Desk and assist a variety of patrons in the use of legal research materials in all formats;
Serve on law library and university library committees;
Engage in professional development activities, scholarship and service; and
Perform other associated duties as required which may include infrequent work during non-traditional business hours.
A J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and an M.L.I.S (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited institution. Candidates who will complete their M.L.I.S. or equivalent prior to start date will be considered;
Active interest in technology and experience using technology to support innovation and/or productivity enhancements;
Strong communication skills; including a high comfort level interacting with a wide range of patrons; and
Demonstrated ability to work independently within a framework of assigned responsibilities, as well as the ability to collaborate effectively with others.
Knowledge or interest in institutional respositories and platforms, preferably Digital Commons;
Knowledge of copyright law and use of intellectual property in scholarly publishing;
Familiarity with the scholarly domain of the field of law;
Experience developing and supporting innovative projects in all stages of the life cycle of scholarly content; and
Familiarity with best practices in creation and management of institutional repositories.
Salary and Benefits:
Salary based on education, qualifications and experience. This position is a three-year, renewable contract position.
