Description

The Emory Antibiotic Resistance Center and Emory Vaccine Center at the Yerkes National Primate Research Center at Emory University is currently seeking a Research Specialist that will be hired at the level of Lead or Senior, depending on experience, to join the laboratory of Dr. David Weiss to broadly study pathogenic and commensal bacteria.

Studies include how pathogenic and commensal bacteria compete within the microbiome, and the emerging phenomenon of bacterial antibiotic heteroresistance. We have discovered that heteroresistance can be exploited to identify antibiotic combinations capable of treating otherwise untreatable infections. These studies will include bacteria causing secondary infections in COVID patients. These research projects are highly translational and innovative. Experience working with mice is highly preferred although not essential.

The ideal candidate should be motivated, dependable, a self-starter, detail-oriented, have a positive attitude and passion research. The Research Specialist Lead or Senior will be a team player who is willing to learn on the job and collaborate with lab members and center members. The new hire will work to ensure the highest quality of laboratory research support, and has good communication skills with co-workers, the management team, PI’s, research staff, students, and other support services.

JOB DESCRIPTIONS:

LEAD RESEARCH SPECIALIST

  • Under minimal supervision, performs a variety of specialized and complex research and laboratory tests and procedures.Uses independent judgment in applying or adapting scientific techniques

  • May assist in protocol design.

  • Investigates and proposes alternative experimental procedures for consideration by a principal investigator.

  • Assists in planning and scheduling research procedures.

  • Analyzes and interprets results of studies.

  • Demonstrates and trains others in the proper use/operation of laboratory techniques and equipment.

  • Calibrates, troubleshoots and performs routine repair and maintenance of equipment.

  • Monitors laboratory processes to maintain quality assurance standards.

  • Records results of studies, compiles and analyzes data and prepares charts and graphs.

  • Monitors the handling, storage and disposal of hazardous substances

SENIOR RESEARCH SPECIALIST

  • Independently performs a wide range of highly technical and complex research and laboratory tests and procedures.

  • Devises highly specialized research procedures by applying a knowledge of advanced research techniques and equipment.

  • Provides input to protocol development.

  • Serves as a technical resource for other research personnel.

  • Analyzes and interprets the results of studies.

  • Investigates and recommends alternative approaches to improve the quality of results.

  • Trains research staff in specialized procedures and theoretical concepts for unique tests.

  • Recommends new equipment and supplies needed for specialized procedures.

  • Provides input into the development of departmental goals and objectives.

  • May assist in grant and other funding application preparation.

  • Prepares written materials, charts and graphs on specialized techniques and research results for publication or presentation.

  • Oversees quality assurance of research performed by others.

BOTH LEAD AND SENIOR

  • Reviews literature for related research developments and techniques and compiles findings.

  • Monitors the handling, storage and disposal of hazardous substances.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

  • Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

LEAD

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field AND two years of research experience,OR

  • Equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

SENIOR

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field AND four years of research experienceOR

  • Equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR BOTH:

  • Excellent interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills

  • Evidence of excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to act with integrity and professionalism.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office and Office 365 applications.

  • Experience in biomedical research.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work environment involves working with biohazardous blood and tissues.

  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.

  • Work is normally performed in a typical laboratory environment.

  • Requires the ability to bend, kneel, and/or squat.
