Emory Healthcare/Emory University Lead Research Specialist (Emerson Site) in Atlanta, Georgia
Under minimal supervision the Lead Research Specialist performs a variety of specialized and complex research and laboratory tests and experiments according to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules in the Robert P. Apkarian Integrated Electron Microscopy Core (IEMC). Operates and carries-out basic maintenance of transmission electron microscopes (TEMs) and associated equipment. Therefore, experience in electron microscopy is preferred. Specialized training will be provided for those with basic TEM experience. Plans and executes experiments and assists core users in electron microscopy sample preparation and imaging as prescribed by a supervisor (Core Director or Scientific Director). Contributes to the implementation of new experimental methods in electron microscopy and tissue preparation. Ensures accurate and adequate data recording, maintenance and delivery from studies for IEMC customers. Participates in the general organization and maintenance of the IEMC infrastructure. Performs related responsibilities as required by the Core Director and Scientific Director
Uses independent judgment in applying or adapting scientific techniques.
May assist in protocol design.
Investigates and proposes alternative experimental procedures for consideration by a principal investigator.
Analyzes and interprets results of studies.
Demonstrates and trains others in the proper use/operation of laboratory techniques and equipment.
Calibrates, troubleshoots and performs routine repair and maintenance of equipment.
Reviews literature for related research developments and techniques and compiles findings.
Monitors laboratory processes to maintain quality assurance standards.
Records results of studies, compiles and analyzes data and prepares charts and graphs.
Monitors the handling, storage and disposal of hazardous substances.
Performs related responsibilities as required.
Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.
Bachelor's degree in a scientific field and two years of research experience, or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
Tissue preparation for electron microscopy (i.e. fixation, dehydration, embedding, and sectioning) and electron microscopy data acquisition desired.
Cryo-electron microscopy sample preparation and imaging will be considered a plus.
