KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under minimal supervision, performs a variety of specialized and complex research and laboratory tests and procedures.
Uses independent judgment in applying or adapting scientific techniques.
May assist in protocol design.
Investigates and proposes alternative experimental procedures for consideration by a principal investigator.
Assists in planning and scheduling research procedures.
Analyzes and interprets results of studies.
Demonstrates and trains others in the proper use/operation of laboratory techniques and equipment.
Calibrates, troubleshoots and performs routine repair and maintenance of equipment.
Reviews literature for related research developments and techniques and compiles findings.
Monitors laboratory processes to maintain quality assurance standards.
Records results of studies, compiles and analyzes data and prepares charts and graphs.
Monitors the handling, storage and disposal of hazardous substances.
Performs related responsibilities as required.

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:
The lead research specialist will work in the Sleep Epidemiology Research Group, led by Dr. Dayna Johnson. This position involves working on several projects that are aimed at sleep measurement and understanding determinants and health consequences of sleep problems. This position will be a split between synthesizing sleep data and data collection. The candidate will co-lead the sleep data collection processes by serving as the study contact person, scoring data (training will be provided), and reconciling data. Working evenings and weekends (3-4 hours twice a month) are a requirement for this position. The lead research specialist is expected to work under minimum supervision. The job responsibilities include maintaining research equipment in the office, calibrating and maintaining equipment, troubleshooting research devices as needed, entering data into database (e.g., redcap), utilizing online platforms to transfer data, process and score data from wearables using software on a provided computer, provide data summaries (in partnership with the study analyst), communicate with external teams, and represent the team at virtual meetings with internal and external researchers. The candidate will also be responsible for recruiting/scheduling research participants, completing research visits (data collection) in homes of participants, and processing participant incentives. In partnership with another team member, they will conduct the field visits which entail administering questionnaires, initializing air, light and noise monitoring devices, instructing participants on the sleep monitor and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, and processing and mailing saliva samples. Several times a week, they will visit the homes of participants in the evenings and weekends to conduct the research visits, thus reliable transportation is required (mileage will be reimbursed). The candidate will review, produce quality control grades under the direction of Dr. Johnson or project manager. They will also oversee mailing the sleep and cardiovascular feedback letters to the participants, and to their physicians upon request from participants. The candidate will engage in other research-related tasks as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in a scientific field and two years of research experience, or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
NOTE: Position tasks are required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location; working remote is not an option. Emory reserves the right to change this status with notice to employee.
