Description

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Under minimal supervision, performs a variety of specialized and complex research and laboratory tests and procedures.

  • Uses independent judgment in applying or adapting scientific techniques. May assist in protocol design.

  • Investigates and proposes alternative experimental procedures for consideration by a principal investigator.

  • Assists in planning and scheduling research procedures.

  • Analyzes and interprets results of studies.

  • Demonstrates and trains others in the proper use/operation of laboratory techniques and equipment.

  • Calibrates, troubleshoots and performs routine repair and maintenance of equipment.

  • Reviews literature for related research developments and techniques and compiles findings.

  • Monitors laboratory processes to maintain quality assurance standards.

  • Records results of studies, compiles and analyzes data and prepares charts and graphs.

  • Monitors the handling, storage and disposal of hazardous substances.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

  • Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS:

  • Under general supervision, performs defined research and laboratory tests and experiments according to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules in a high containment facility including both BioSafety Levels (BSL) 2+ and 3.

  • Performs experiments that include risk group 2 & 3 as defined by, and in compliance with, the Biosafety in Microbiological & Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL) including, but not limited to, SARS-CoV2, Yellow Fever virus, Dengue virus, and Hepatitis viruses.

  • Designs and performs experiments as prescribed by a principal investigator.

  • May be required to participate in laboratory maintenance activities such as sterilization and cleaning of equipment, ordering of supplies, inventory, and media preparation.

  • Maintains records, files and logs of work performed in laboratory notebooks and computer databases.

  • Compiles data and records results of studies for publications, grants, and seminar presentations.

Candidate will be responsible for performing the following tasks

  • High risk group 2 & 3 pathogen handling / infection assays

  • Antiviral compound screening

  • Establishing, maintaining, and cryopreserving multiple mammalian cell culture cell lines

  • Maintaining up-to-date training high containment

  • Attending weekly meetings to present data and design new experiments

  • Meet when necessary with collaborators to initiate or progress with new and ongoing projects

  • Restocking supplies

  • Sterilization of lab supplies

  • Media preparation

  • Freezer maintenance, organization, and temperature monitoring

  • Biohazardous waste disposal

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field and two years of research experience, or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in a scientific field

  • Experience in performing virological assays including safe virus handling procedures as outlined by the BMBL, generation and characterization of stocks, virus infectivity assays, and virus inactivation techniques.

  • Some experience in mammalian cell culture.

NOTE: Position tasks are required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location; working remote is not an option. Emory reserves the right to change this status with notice to employee.
