Emory University Lead Research Specialist in Atlanta, Georgia



  • Under minimal supervision, performs a variety of specialized and complex research and laboratory tests and procedures.

  • Uses independent judgment in applying or adapting scientific techniques.

  • May assist in protocol design.

  • Investigates and proposes alternative experimental procedures for consideration by a principal investigator.

  • Assists in planning and scheduling research procedures.

  • Analyzes and interprets results of studies.

  • Demonstrates and trains others in the proper use/operation of laboratory techniques and equipment.

  • Calibrates, troubleshoots and performs routine repair and maintenance of equipment.

  • Reviews literature for related research developments and techniques and compiles findings. Monitors laboratory processes to maintain quality assurance standards.

  • Records results of studies, compiles and analyzes data and prepares charts and graphs.

  • Monitors the handling, storage and disposal of hazardous substances.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

  • Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.


  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field and two years of research experience, or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

The Emory Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine is considered one of the top academic pulmonary, allergy, critical care and sleep programs in the country. Its progress has been possible due to the vision of its leaders during the 1990s, the continuing hard work and dedication of its faculty and trainees, the commitment for excellence of its staff, and the invaluable support of its partners. The division has a strong history of accomplishments and has an unyielding commitment to patient care, research and training the next generation of pulmonary, allergy, critical care and sleep medicine researchers and clinicians. The position of Research Specialist supports research efforts within the division.


  • Receive and process human tissue samples to create aseptic cell preparations suitable for cell culture. Receiving and processing tissue samples often requires working non-standard hours.

  • Cryopreserve cells and maintain an inventory of archived cell types

  • Prepare and distribute human cell cultures and specialized tissue culture media.

  • Maintain records related to cell ordering and distribution as well as files and logs of work performed in laboratory notebooks.

  • Basic knowledge of molecular biology (bacterial transformation, plasmid preparations) preferred.

  • Participate in laboratory maintenance activities such as sterilization and cleaning of equipment, ordering of supplies and maintaining inventory.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required by the principal investigator.
