The Emory Vaccine Center at the Yerkes National Primate Research Center at Emory University is currently seeking a full time Lead Research Specialist OR Senior Research Specialist to join the laboratory of Dr. Rui Kong to assist with antibody and vaccine research against HIV-1 and other pathogens.

Please note: The level of Research Specialist position offered (Lead or Senior) to the selected finalist will be determined after the completion of the interview processes and will be based on meeting or exceeding the Minimum Qualifications for either the Lead or Senior level position as included in the details below, under the MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS heading.

The Lead OR Senior Research Specialist will be working in a newly developed laboratory as a part of a team working on HIV-1 antibody and vaccine research at the Yerkes National Primate Center. The preferred candidate should have a solid background in Virology and Immunology coursework and must be comfortable with chemistry and mathematics. Experience with cell culture, molecular biology and protein purification is a huge plus. Organization and communication are essential.

This position reports directly to Dr. Rui Kong who is a Georgia Research Alliance Distinguished Investigator, Assistant Professor in Emory Vaccine Center, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Emory University School of Medicine, and Assistant Professor in Yerkes National Primate Research Center.

JOB DESCRIPTION FOR BOTH LEAD and SENIOR RESEARCH SPECIALIST:

  • Under minimal supervision, performs a variety of specialized and complex research and laboratory tests and procedures.

  • Uses independent judgment in applying or adapting scientific techniques.

  • May assist in protocol design.

  • Investigates and proposes alternative experimental procedures for consideration by a principal investigator. Assists in planning and scheduling research procedures.

  • Analyzes and interprets results of studies.

  • Demonstrates and trains others in the proper use/operation of laboratory techniques and equipment. Calibrates, troubleshoots and performs routine repair and maintenance of equipment.

  • Reviews literature for related research developments and techniques and compiles findings.

  • Monitors laboratory processes to maintain quality assurance standards.

  • Records results of studies, compiles and analyzes data and prepares charts and graphs.

  • Monitors the handling, storage and disposal of hazardous substances.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

  • Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR BOTH LEAD and SENIOR LEVEL:

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field

LEAD EXPERIENCE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two years of research experience, or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

SENIOR EXPERIENCE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Four years of research experience, OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated outstanding working habits, including the ability to work independently and in a team environment

  • Demonstrated ability to work in an animal research environment

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Experience working in a biosafety environment

  • Demonstrated computer skills proficiency

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions

  • Work is normally performed in a typical laboratory environment

  • Requires the ability to stand for prolonged periods of time
