We are seeking a highly motivated and organized individual eager to lead and guide an independent project in a team-oriented, highly collaborative environment.
Under minimal supervision, the Assistant Academic Research Scientist performs a wide range of highly technical and complex tasks necessary to advance basic and/or translational research programs. Responsible for working with experimental platforms specific to the hiring Program. Duties will include but are not limited to experimental design, data analysis, and interpretation and communication of results of basic and/or translational research.
Will be required to reviews literature and apply advanced knowledge, skills, and input necessary for protocol development. May assist in grant and other funding applications, as necessary and appropriate. Performs other responsibilities as required.
Preference for applicants with experience with: advanced cell culture techniques, molecular cloning, gene transfection and mutagenesis, gene expression analysis, and advanced histochemical and confocal imaging. Familiarity with transcriptional control, metabolism, membrane protein biology and hepatobiliary physiology would be advantageous but not required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: PhD or MD OR Master's degree and five years of professional level experience in a technical or research lab. Internship experience or experience prior to attaining the qualifying degree is not considered eligible work experience for this job classification. Laboratory experience will be based on area of assignment.
The Karpen Lab engages in 2 Research Arcs:
Roles for RXRα heterodimers in inflammation, metabolism and liver biology. A focus upon adaptation to High-Fat Diets and integrative aspects of bile acid signaling. Unique modified RXRα cell lines and mouse strains will serve as a centerpiece for exploration of molecular, cellular, and physiological roles for this crucial, post-translationally-modified nuclear receptor. Expertise in transcriptional regulation, molecular cloning, liver and intestinal physiology are prioritized.
Exploration of the functional implications of newly-discovered genes involved in the pathogenesis of the principal liver disease of infants—biliary atresia. Studies will involve novel CRISPR-derived mouse lines and cell culture with an emphasis on epithelial cell biology, cholangiocytes, primarily ciliary signaling, and recruitment of inflammation/fibrosis. Skill sets in plasmid constructions, transfections, confocal imaging as well as epithelial biology are preferred.
