The Department of Anesthesiology at Grady Memorial Hospital is seeking a full-time advanced practice provider (NP or PA) to become part of our acute and chronic pain services. This individual will work collaboratively with attending and resident physicians in the assessment and management of inpatients referred to the acute pain consult service, and follow-up on the patients who have received nerve blocks and catheters, and follow-up on patients in Grady outpatient chronic pain clinic. This position is a M-F, 9a-5pm, no call position.

NP or PA, General Requirements

  • Assists in the evaluation and treatment of patients. Documents the delivery of care in the individual's medical records.

  • Conducts patient interviews and documents patient histories, psychosocial histories, health status and medical problems or potential problems.

  • Under the direction of a physician, performs physical examinations and specialized diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures including wound suturing and dressing changes.

  • Assists physician in diagnosing medical problems, developing care plans, and prescribing treatment.

  • Orders, schedules and/or performs laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures. Communicates necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of scheduled procedures to patient.

  • In collaboration with physician, arranges for consultations with or referrals to other medical professional or community services.

  • Educates patient on health habits, self-examinations, behavior management, need for follow-up assessments/treatments, at home medical care, medication and other issues related to medical or health problems.

  • Works with manager to formulate plan for professional development.

  • Attends educational in-services as appropriate.

  • Participates in professional activities and organizations to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments.

  • Maintains and updates current, accurate patient records including medical assessment, interventions, and evaluations.

  • Collects and interprets diagnostic data to implement appropriate care patient care plans. Prepares statistical reports and analyses of research projects and investigational protocols; reports on progress, adverse trends and appropriate conclusions and recommendations.

  • Trains and teaches other health care professionals including students and residents in techniques and procedures unique to specific setting.

  • Actively participates on organizational health services committees.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required.


  • Perform comprehensive assessment and management of pain issues for patients referred to the acute pain consult service (post-traumatic pain, post-surgical pain, acute on chronic pain exacerbations) through initial evaluation and follow-up.

  • This role will involve obtaining a comprehensive pain history, perform a focused physical exam, and establishing a diagnosis and treatment plan, and documenting in the medical record under supervision by the acute pain service physician.

  • This care will include management of opiate and non-opiate adjunct pain medications, single shot nerve block injections, nerve block catheters, and epidurals.

  • Perform comprehensive assessment, troubleshooting, and management of peripheral nerve block catheters and epidural catheters.

  • Obtain procedural consent from patients/family members for nerve blocks/catheters.

  • Spend a portion of time in chronic pain clinic seeing follow-up and post-procedure visits

  • Make follow-up phone calls to patients who are discharged home after receiving nerve blocks/catheters to ensure expectant course and provide troubleshooting/triage over the phone as needed.

  • Assist with onboarding to new anesthesia residents rotating through the acute pain service.

  • Maintain good communication amongst consulting teams, patients, ancillary staff, and family members.

  • Independently seek opportunities to expand clinical knowledge and skills.

  • Participate in departmental / division / hospital committees as needed.


  • Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program or Physician Assistant program.

  • Currently licensed as an advanced practice nurse in the state of Georgia by the Georgia Board of Nursing and certified as a Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or equivalent body, or Certified as a Physician's Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).

  • Licensed as appropriate in the state of Georgia.

  • May require at least one year of direct experience in one or more high acuity clinical specialties. BLS, ACLS, and Healthcare Provider certifications required.

  • Acute Care Certification or willingness to get Acute Care Certification within two years of hire date.

  • Experience with acute pain, chronic pain, physiatry, surgical specialties, psychiatry, palliative care helpful but not required.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work with an interdisciplinary team is required.

  • New graduates are encouraged to apply.

  • Experience with EPIC EMR is a plus.
