JOB DESCRIPTION: Performs assigned patient care and observation duties under the direction of a Registered Nurse. Monitors and operates patient care equipment safely. Maintains clean and healthy environment. Assists in the use of anti-embolism stockings and pneumatic compression stockings. Appropirately discards disposable suction supplies. Assists in patient care using bedside blood glucose machine, bag-valve-mask device, oxygen, suction equipment, and incentive spirometer. Operates converter chair, lifts, scales, beds, stretchers, wheelchairs, non-invasive BP monitors, automatic thermometer, sphygmomanometer, pulse oximeter, and computer. Reports observations and unusual information regarding patients to RN/LPN. Records intake and output. Records vital signs and blood glucose monitoring results. Records observations of site care according to procedure. Observes color, consistency, amount and odor from drainage tubes. Records output and notifies RN/LPN of findings.Assists RN/LPN in providing care according to individual needs by assisting with range of motion, ambulation, patient transfers, diet, elimination and hygiene. Assists patients with ADLs in an effective and efficient manner. Performs vital signs and blood glucose monitoring. Observes IV site appearance, discontinues peripheral INTs, performs peripheral line dressing changes and simple wound care. Performs foley and straight catheterization and discontinues foley catheters. Performs pre-and-post-operative procedural care and assists with respiratory functions/procedures. Administers enemas. Performs initial telemetry placement and connection to monitor. Assist with sterile and/or special procedures at the bedside. Connects Pleurovac to suction (units 4B, 5B & 21).Prepares room to receive patient by setting up necessary equipment and ensuring neatness and cleanliness of room. Transports patients and specimens throughout the hospital, and contributes to completion of admission, transfer, discharge, and assists with postmortem care. Utilizes appropriate technology to complete processes, i.e. Conversant. Demonstrates specific areas of skill competency by completion of skills checklists within four weeks of employment. Works with manager to formulate plan for professional development. Attends educational in-services as appropriate. Participates in professional activities and organizations to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments. Complies with Standard Precautions guidelines and all other Infection Control procedures and safety standards to maintain and promote a clean and healthy work environment. As part of a patient focused service, promotes a supportive and healing environment so that customer and staff satisfaction are enhanced. Supports cost efficient/effective delivery of care.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing degree program having completed two semesters or three quarters of clinical rotations. BLS and Healthcare Provider certifications required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: (Medium-Heavy) 36-75 lbs, 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 20-35 lbs, 34-66% of the workday; (frequently); 10-20 lbs, 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 75 lbs max; Carrying of objects up to 35 lbs; Occasional to frequent standing & walking; Occasional sitting; Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing); Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
