Job Description Performs assigned patient care and observation duties under the direction of an RN/LPN. Maintains a clean and safe environment. Communicates with patients, families and members of the nursing team. Participates in the orientation of nursing support assistants to the unit. Maintains hospital and unit-specific competencies. As part of a patient focused service, promotes a supportive and healing environment so that customer and staff satisfaction are enhanced. Assists in emergency situations as directed by an RN or LPN. Ensures that prescribed measures related to hygiene, comfort, and rest are provided. Complies with Standard Precautions guidelines, Infection Control procedures, and safety standards to maintain and promote a clean and healthy work environment. Assists in the use of anti-embolism stockings, pneumatic compression stockings, and appropriately discards disposable suction supplies. Assists in the operation of converter chair, lifts, scales, beds, stretcher, wheelchairs, and computers. Records patient intake and output. Assists RN/LPN in providing patient care according to individual needs by assisting with range of motion, ambulation, patient transfers, diet, elimination and hygiene. Observes and reports significant or unusual information about the patient and environment to the RN/LPN and documents appropriately and in a timely manner. Prepares room to receive patient by setting up necessary equipment and ensuring neatness and cleanliness of room. Transports patients and patient specimens throughout the hospital. Contributes to the completion of patient admission, transfer, and discharge. Assists with postmortem care. Utilizes appropriate technology to complete processes. Participates in unit-based and system-wide Performance Improvement program. Supports cost efficient/effective delivery of care. Complies with standards of care and with Department of Nursing and Hospital policies and procedures. May participate in research projects impacting patient care areas. Performs related responsibilities as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A high school diploma or equivalent. Heartsaver certification required. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: (Medium-Heavy) 36-75 lbs, 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 20-35 lbs, 34-66% of the workday; (frequently); 10-20 lbs, 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 75 lbs max; Carrying of objects up to 35 lbs; Occasional to frequent standing & walking; Occasional sitting; Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing); Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks; ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Factors affecting environment conditions may vary depending on the assigned work area and tasks. Environmental exposures include, but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure; Bio-hazardous waste Chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors; Communicable diseases; Electrical shock; Floor Surfaces; Hot/Cold Temperatures; Indoor/Outdoor conditions; Latex; Lighting ; Patient care/handling injuries; Radiation ; Shift work; Travel may be required; Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators; environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks
