Emory Healthcare/Emory University Oncology Research Nurse, Phase One Clinical Trial Unit, 8am-5:30pm in Atlanta, Georgia
Position Title: Nurse Clinician, Phase One Clinical Trial Unit, Winship Cancer Institute
Responsible for enhancing the patient experience through collaboration with the research team, clinical staff and investigators in the Phase One Clinical Trial Program. Assesses, triages, plans and coordinates patient care and serves as the primary point of contact for clinical care needs for patients, internal and external providers, and research team members.
Minimum Education; Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Bachelor’s degree in Nursing required.
Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Georgia. BLS required.
OCN, AOCN, AOCNS certification preferred or to be obtained within 6 months.
CITI and GCP course completion upon hire
ONS chemotherapy / biotherapy course completion within 6 months upon hire
Minimum Experience: 1 year oncology experience.

Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize and reprioritize quickly
Basic computer skills
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Clinical Care (Facilitates the appropriate and efficient delivery of healthcare services, both within and across systems, to promote optimal outcomes while delivering patient-centered care.)
Coordinates care with the multidisciplinary team, promoting timely follow-up on treatment and supportive care recommendations.Facilitates timely scheduling of appointments, diagnostic testing, and procedures such as paracentesis and biopsies to promote continuity of care.
Applies evidence-based clinical practice guidelines, symptom management tools, and protocols in patient evaluation and care.
Provides psychosocial support to and facilitates appropriate referrals for patients, families, and caregivers.
Obtains updated outside clinical records including outside radiology images for upload.
Assists in the ordering of molecular testing via tissue or blood based methods.
Coordinates home care and hospice services for outpatients including documentations requirements.
Ensures that telephone triage of phase one patients and family concerns are addressed and properly communicated to research team members, unit staff and providers in a timely manner.
Consistently performs accurate medication reconciliation, medication refills and obtains prior authorizations when needed.
Demonstrates proficiency with CPOE order entry (eg: lab, radiology, referrals).
Assists patients in completing documentation of paperwork necessary for the returning to / excuse from work, school and / or disability.
Facilitates the scheduling of new patient consults in the phase one unit.
Demonstrates proficiency in use of OnCore. Identifies prohibited medications in a protocol and collaborates with the research coordinator and provider before advising a patient.
Demonstrates appropriate documentation of patient reported symptoms that allows accurate grading of adverse events using the CTCAE.
Applies knowledge of insurance processes (e.g., Medicare, Medicaid, third-party payers) and their impact on patient care.
Supports a smooth transition of patients from active treatment on a phase one clinical trial to appropriate follow-up with the referring clinical team.
Communication ( Demonstrates interpersonal communication skills (writing, speaking, and listening) that enable exchange of ideas and information effectively with patients, families, and colleagues at all levels.)
Acts as a liaison between the patients, families, and caregivers, referring physicians, clinical research team and providers to optimize outcomes.Communicates patient care updates and needs with referring physicians, internal and external to Emory.
Facilitates communication among members of the multidisciplinary cancer care team to prevent fragmented or delayed care.
Adheres to established regulations concerning patient information and privacy
Ensures that communication is culturally sensitive and appropriate for identified level of health literacy.
Attends phase one clinical trial working group meetings.
Patient & Family Education (Provide appropriate and timely education to patients, families, and caregivers to facilitate understanding and support informed decision making.)
Assesses educational needs of patients, families, and caregivers by taking into consideration barriers to care (e.g., literacy, language, cultural influences, comorbidities). Provides personalized education and support.
Demonstrates understanding of the phases of therapeutic clinical trials, the importance of basic principles of pharmacokinetics and time-sensitive nature of protocol required data points and communicates that to patients effectively.
Orients and educates patients, families, and caregivers to the cancer healthcare system, multidisciplinary team member roles, and available resources. Collaborates with the research team in order to educate patient/caregiver while enrolled on trial.
Educates and reinforces the significance of adherence with the patients, families, and caregivers regarding treatment schedules, protocols, and follow-up.
Professional Role (Demonstrate professionalism within the workplace and community through respectful interactions and effective teamwork. Promotes evidence-based practice to improve the care of patients enrolled on clinical trials.
Demonstrates effective communication with peers, members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team, and community organizations / resources.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Provides clinical and administrative nursing support for research trials, studies and projects. Recruits and screens potential participants. Performs patient/research subject evaluations, administers medications and research instruments and collects data. May assist with surgical procedures. Provides patient education related to study. Makes referrals to in-house or community professionals. Follows-up with project participants in accordance with established standards and protocols. May coordinate staffing or scheduling assignments. Performs related responsibilities as required. Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: All nurses employed in roles requiring an unencumbered nursing license must have a valid, active license or temporary permit approved by the Georgia Licensing Board. One year of related nursing experience.
