The Operations Manager, Animal Care (Facilities & Equipment) manages 9 sites with 502 rooms encompassing 158,252 gross square feet. This position oversees the maintenance and repair, as well as functionality of the DAR animal care and husbandry equipment. DAR equipment, with an estimated replacement value of $19 million, ranges from fixed building equipment to moveable equipment and a fleet of 10 vehicles. This position also oversees the DAR warehouse and supplies for supporting the animal facilities, and is responsible and accountable for animal care operations.
The Operations Manager, Animal Care (Facilities and Equipment) and the counterpart Operations Manager (Staffing and Husbandry) work closely, side-by-side, as a team and are coached, mentored and directed together by the Director of the Division of Animal Resources. This team cares for over 70,000 vertebrate animals with a replacement value of $19.3 Million on any given day, in support of over 244 scientists in their research activities with animals and overall 1,675 persons with access to the animal facilities.
Develops and implements animal care program that provides proper housing, sanitation, nourishment, and humane handling for a large and diverse population of laboratory animals.
Oversees buildings and grounds, inclduing:
general facility and fleet maintenance;
ordering & maintaining all fixed and moveable equipment, ordering & maintaining appropriate inventories of animal care supplies and diets;
communications with laboratories and investigators;
ensuring a safe workplace;
key leadership for disaster/emergency planning & operations, managing the caging and equipment inventory;
direction of a team of maintenance mechanics;
involvement in construction and renovation projects;
response to environmental and security alarms;
participating in the sustainability program; and
ensuring regulatory compliance.
Manages and directs facilities maintenance and construction services to ensure efficient operation in compliance with federal and organizational regulations.
Supervises animal care employees.
Re-engineers (designs and manufactures) equipment to meet the needs of our research environment and specific animal needs.
Covers for the Operations Manager (Staffing & Husbandry) during periods of leave.
A bachelors degree in science, an engineering discipline, business administration or related field.
Seven years of operations experience within a research animal facility, three of which must be in a supervisory capacity.
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
Ideally, candidates for this position should be certified as a Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) or Lab Animal Technologist (LATG) with the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) and will be expected to have completed (or will be required to complete) the two-week AALAS Institute for Laboratory Animal Management (ILAM).
The candidate should have specific expertise with animal facilities, equipment and caging, watering systems, mechanical systems, and automation.
