JOB DESCRIPTION: Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career. The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc. Designs and evaluates experiments. Develops new ideas that promote current research. Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator. May be responsible for operation of specific equipment. May teach techniques to others, train, and supervise research staff. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee. The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available. Appointments cannot exceed five years.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills. The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues. Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.
The Papa Lab in the Yerkes National Primate Research Center at Emory University is seeking applicants for NIH funded postdoctoral positions in neuroscience. The Lab studies the basal ganglia function in movement disorders, with a particular interest in Parkinson’s disease and Dystonia. The research goal is to develop novel therapeutics to improve motor and other disabilities in patients affected by those disorders. Newly funded projects target the adaptive striatal mechanisms in response to chronic neurodegenerative or functional processes. Studies apply electrophysiology, optogenetics, behavioral and molecular pharmacology approaches in rodent and non-human primate models.
The successful candidate will design and perform experiments including genetic, optogenetic and chemogenetic manipulation of striatal neuronal activity to analyze specifically targeted gene therapy. Training experience will be further enriched by participating in local and national meetings, applying for research grants, attending seminars and courses, as well as establishing close collaborations with other laboratories at Emory University that also work on systems neuroscience focusing on the sensorimotor, memory and learning functions.
The candidate sought to fill this position should be keen to work with in vivo models and train in neural recordings from populations of neurons in awake behaving animals. Experience working with MATLAB and the analyses of spiking/LFP activity would be preferable.
