Postdoctoral Fellow: Electrophysiology, Basal ganglia, Striatum.

Applicants are sought to fill a post-doctoral position inthe Emory National Primate Research Center at Emory University. The selected candidate will work in NIH-sponsored research for studies of Parkinson’s disease pathophysiology. The focus of these studies is on striatal mechanisms ofbasal ganglia dysfunctionunderlying motor and cognitive deficits. Different manipulations are used in disease models to investigate cellular/circuit changes and explore therapeutic targets.Emory University offers a rich scientific environment with opportunities for multiple collegial interactions and collaborations to support and enhance post-doctoral studies.

Candidates must hold a PhD, MD or equivalent degree, or being near graduation, and will be selected on the basis of strong background in electrophysiology and physiology data analyses including Matlab. In-vivo recordings applying optogenetics and pharmacological tools to analyze signaling mechanisms in animal models are a major part of studies. Additional qualifications include previous training in basal ganglia circuits and Parkinson’s disease research. Important technical skills include the preparation of animal models, implant surgeries, and brain injections of viral vectors.

The selected candidates will be asked to present his past work at a seminar and provide recommendation letters and references.

Emory General Job Description : Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career. The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc. Designs and evaluates experiments. Develops new ideas that promote current research. Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator. May be responsible for operation of specific equipment. May teach techniques to others, train, and supervise research staff. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee. The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available. Appointments cannot exceed five years.

Emory Minimum Qualifications : A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills. The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues. Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.
