A postdoctoral position in Synthetic and Medicinal Chemistry is available at the Emory Institute for Drug Development (EIDD) for a highly motivated individual seeking to build a career in translational synthetic chemistry. The project(s) will focus on the synthesis and identification, followed by optimization, of active antiviral compounds, and then the optimization of synthetic processes to prepare such compounds to meet key development objectives and milestones. Furthermore, interested individuals must also be motivated to prepare key research results and findings for peer review and oral presentations.

Our institute is dedicated to the identification and development of antiviral agents suitable for the treatment and prevention of disease resulting from emerging and reemerging viral infections that affect hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Since our inception in 2010, we have advanced 1 compound to phase 3 clinical trials, one to phase 2, and a third to late stage preclinical testing. The successful applicant will join our multidisciplinary research group working on fully integrated activities for the discovery and development of new antiviral therapies.

A Ph.D. in synthetic organic chemistry or related fields is required. The primary criteria for selection of an appropriate candidate is a strong background and demonstrated proficiency in multi-step organic synthesis of complex molecules and a thorough grasp and command of modern and classic organic transformations and mechanisms. Preference will be given to individuals with experience in the synthesis of ribonucleoside analogs and their phosphate metabolites, although this is not a requirement.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career. The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc. Designs and evaluates experiments. Develops new ideas that promote current research. Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator. May be responsible for operation of specific equipment. May teach techniques to others, train, and supervise research staff. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee. The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available. Appointments cannot exceed five years.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills. The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues. Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.
