Emory Healthcare/Emory University Post Doctoral Fellow-Psychophysics and Imaging Neuroscience (PaIN) Lab in Atlanta, Georgia
JOB DESCRIPTION: Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career. The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc. Designs and evaluates experiments. Develops new ideas that promote current research. Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator. May be responsible for operation of specific equipment. May teach techniques to others, train, and supervise research staff. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee. The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available. Appointments cannot exceed five years.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills. The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues. Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.
The Psychophysics and Imaging Neuroscience (PaIN) Lab, which is devoted to studying the mechanisms of sensory processing in pain-free participants and their disruption in individuals with chronic pain, is recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow with expertise in functional brain neuroimaging to join our research team.
The Fellow will have the opportunity to lead magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) based projects on pain processing using fMRI, proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy, resting state functional connectivity, voxel based morphometry, and other techniques. Previous experience with fMRI processing (e.g. SPM, FSL, free-surfer) is required. Programming (e.g. Matlab, Python, LabView etc.) and machine learning expertise are desired. It is not essential that the Fellow’s previous experience have been in pain.
The PaIN Lab is committed to the training and career development of its members. The Fellow will be encouraged to (1) obtain first author publications, (2) network and present research at national and international conferences (e.g. Society for Neuroscience, Human Brain Mapping, American Pain Society, International Association for the Study of Pain), (3) pursue their own research ideas in addition to overseeing ongoing PaIN Lab projects, (4) be involved in thementorship of more junior PaIN Lab members, (5) learn new techniques, (6) apply for internal and external funding, (7) attend lab meetings, seminars, workshops, etc. for continued learning and career development.
