JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Theater Emory is the producing organization of Emory University, and is affiliated with the Dept. of Theater and Dance. As part of the Theater Emory (TE) leadership team, identifies both professional and student technicians for Theater Emory productions.

  • Establishes, manages, and enforces production deadlines. Along with Managing Director, establishes, manages, and oversees production budget lines. Supervises stage management activities including coordinating scheduling in all Theater Emory spaces.

  • Coordinates the scheduling of production-related spaces and resources and facilitates communication of arrangements to Theater Emory production staff and department faculty, as necessary and appropriate. Identifies and facilitates resources needed for and between all guest professionals and TE faculty/staff before and during all productions.

  • Manages rooms, equipment, and resources for rehearsal and other theater-related purposes. Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor's degree and four years of experience in theater production management or related field, OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Aptitude in and knowledge of all aspects of theater production; experience with budgets/finance is preferred. Knowledge of/experience working with Equity theaters preferred. A master's degree is preferred.

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:

Manage rooms, equipment, and resources for rehearsal and other theater-related purposes.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Production Manager as Department Head with season focus.

  • Coordinate seasonal production calendar with Theater Emory leadership.

  • Interview and hire stage managers for Theater Emory season and advise guest companies using the Theater Emory facilities. Interview, hire, train, and supervise student production assistants.

  • Organize the stage management offices and supervise the purchase of supplies and equipment.

  • Identify production designers and technicians. Create and maintain a database of files and resumes of designers and technicians.

  • Establish and oversee production deadlines and individual production budget lines.

Production Manager with project-specific focus

  • Coordinate activities between directors, designers, and Theater Emory staff before and during all Theater Emory productions.

  • Advise, assist, and define the organization of the production schedule for all auditions, rehearsals, workshops, performances, technical rehearsals, and dress rehearsals. (Note that the PM does not schedule specific technical work calls but coordinates with the Technical Director to communicate these schedules and the space and other resources needed.)

  • Coordinate communication of notes from production meetings, rehearsals, and performances with all production staff, including Stage Managers, Designers, Department Heads, Managing Director, and Artistic Leadership.

  • Supervise and coordinate the rehearsal and performance schedules with Stage Management for all Theater Emory productions.

  • Available as needed during tech week to lend support and to help solve problems associated with current Theater Emory production.

  • Coordinate with stage management to use the venues, spaces, and resources needed for student and professional auditions.

  • Coordinate front-of-house production needs.

Production Liaison for non-Theater Emory projects in Theater Emory venues

  • Act as liaison to university departments and community organizations seeking to use Theater Emory facilities and resources.

  • Responsible for articulating and communicating such requests and seeking consensus from Department Heads. When necessary, duties may include articulating and administering approved project production guidelines.In consultation with the Theater Emory faculty and staff coordinate and oversee the student theater process for use of Theater at Emory resources.

  • Includes editing and publishing the annual “Production Handbook for Student Theater in TE Venues.”

Management of Venues and Facilities

  • As venue manager, create and maintain an inventory list and parameters of each space.Act as the point person for the maintenance of all theater facilities, including performance spaces and off-site storage.

  • In coordination with department heads and Theater Studies staff, coordinate service requests and collaborate with the Department Chair and Managing Director for repair, replacement, and maintenance of equipment and facilities.Manage rooms and resources for rehearsal and other theater-related purposes in coordination with Theater Studies.

  • Responsibilities include articulating room use policies. Responsible for scheduling other rooms as needed in coordination with the Schwartz Center and Emory Student Center staff.

  • Submit and maintain reservations of performance and rehearsal spaces in coordination with the Theater Studies Academic Coordinator.

  • Responsible for issuing any temporary keys necessary for building and room access for rehearsals and other theater-related purposes. Responsible for issuing temporary keys to stage management personnel.

Other duties:

  • If the candidate has a master’s degree, be the instructor of record of the Theater Practicum course, ensure students are enrolled for credit, assign students to various job areas or departments, oversee schedule and attendance, and coordinate with departments to evaluate students for course completion.

  • Act as safety officer for Theater Emory, coordinating with the Technical Director, Assistant Technical Director, Company Manager, and Managing Director. Stay current on safety issues and protocols; alert department heads and leadership of concerns, needed upgrades, or other actions.

  • Other related duties as assigned by the Managing Director.

  • Supervise the following: Production Staff, Theater Technical Coordinator (Asst. technical Director), Theater Technical Specialist (Master Electrician/Sound Engineer), and Costume Shop Manager.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:

  • Budgeting, season planning processes, safety planning.

  • Understanding of devised and new work processes and production planning

  • Commitment to EDI and best practices. Experience implementing that within an organization, and facilitation skills

Experience:

  • Stage and production management experience.

  • Supervisory experience (staff and students)

  • Season planning

  • Strong organizational and communication skills

  • Experience working with students in higher education is preferred

  • Experience developing, coordinating, and maintaining production budgets.

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred

NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location. Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
