Emory Healthcare/Emory University Radiation Therapy Assistant, Proton Therapy Center in Atlanta, Georgia


We are looking for a candidate with a strong rapport-building skillset between patients and imaging/therapy operations and an ability to put cancer patients at ease by demonstrating compassion and patience. The ideal candidate will have experience interacting directly with patients and caregivers, both in-person and virtually, for care assistance as well as scheduling coordination via the patient’s electronic medical record. Candidate will also reconcile scheduling conflicts with involved stakeholders, including patients, caregivers and peers.

The candidate serves as a key contact for radiation treatment scheduling inquiries, both online and via phone, including those from patients, physicians, and caregivers. Candidate will also work in close collaboration with imaging and therapy staff regarding radiation therapy procedure scheduling.

The candidate supports care coordination for patients about to begin radiation therapy treatment as well as those actively undergoing treatment, serving as the primary point of contact for treatment scheduling needs.

Beyond the included job description, additional miscellaneous tasks include but are not limited to: attending to changing and waiting rooms, relaying patient treatment accessories within the building and to partner campuses, inventory management, wheelchair and lifting help, etc. The candidate must treat all individuals with dignity and respect and demonstrate flexibility with section and organizational needs.

  • Role is part administrative (patient scheduling in EMR) and part direct patient-facing (patient assistance while on premises).

  • Position works with patients and families to answer questions, provide emotional support and resolve issues concerning the administrative coordination of their proton therapy daily treatment.

  • Applies advanced interpersonal and communication skills in all interactions with patients, clinical personnel, administrative personnel and care providers.

  • Treats all individuals with dignity and respect.

  • Participates in activities to improve working relationships within imaging, therapy, nursing and overall care coordination.

  • Manages workload and assignments effectively.

  • Adapts well to changes and priority level of duties.

  • Demonstrates flexibility with section and organizational need.

  • Responds constructively to the needs of all those he/ she interacts with on a daily basis.

  • Communicates with staff complimentary/constructive feedback from self and others.



  • Assists all members of the patient's care team including: radiation therapists, radiation oncologists, physicists, dosimetrists, nurses, child life specialists, social workers, administration and others.

  • Greets patients and assists with patient flow to various treatment areas, floors, clinics or departments.

  • Assists radiation therapist in preparing the simulator and treatment rooms for patient care to include ensuring proper attire, patient specific procedure preparations and transferring patients to and from treatment tables.

  • Identifies proper immobilization devices for patient in the patient¿s electronic medical record.

  • Collaborates with radiation therapists to schedule patient treatments based on patient¿s preference.

  • Monitors inventory, stocks supplies, including linen and empties linen hampers throughout the day.

  • Maintains rooms and facility cleanliness.

  • Participates in departmental patient safety initiatives to ensure patient safety and infection control practices at all times. Observes risks to patient safety and takes action to correct. Reports patient complaints or issues to appropriate personnel. Complies with established department policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.

  • Submits SAFE or RO-ILS reports as needed.

  • Wears personal protective equipment as required.

  • Assists with the maintenance of department facilities, equipment, and supplies.

  • Reports maintenance and repair needs to appropriate personnel.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required.


  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Some college preferred.

  • One year work experience in patient care, healthcare environment, or customer service.

  • Basic computer skills; knowledge of MS Office including database management.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification required.

  • Ability to work flexible hours including potential nights, weekends or changes to a scheduled shift or location on short notice.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (Medium): 20-50 lbs.; 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 11-25 lbs., 34-66% of the workday (frequently); 01-10 lbs., 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 50 lbs. max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs. and placing them 5-6 feet above the floor; Frequent standing & walking, Occasional sitting, Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing). Ability to assist or lift impaired patients from a wheelchair or stretcher. Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Factors affecting environment conditions may vary depending on the assigned work area and tasks. Environmental exposures include, but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure Bio-hazardous waste Chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors Communicable diseases Electrical shock , Floor Surfaces, Hot/Cold Temperatures, Indoor/Outdoor conditions, Latex, Lighting, Patient care/handling injuries, Radiation, shift work, travel may be required. Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators. Environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
