The Research Data Manager II is responsible for the management of the lifecycle of research data related to one or multiple labs and their associated research studies.

This position is a key member of the research team and plays a vital role in ensuring the integrity, compliance, and quality of data used in research.The research data manager acts as a liaison between the research team and the broader data manager community to stay abreast of policies and available resources and provide feedback.

As research data are primary assets and scholarly contributions for labs and research institutions, and as requirements for secure and transparent management and sharing of research data are increasing, the role of the research data manager is critical to a research team's success.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Understands and translates best practices of data management for the research teams and ensuring the appropriate quality for the data is used for the research.

  • Works with the research team and the broader community to determine best ways to acquire, manage, find and access, track and manage, and destroy data based on Emory University policies and procedures as well as requirements and practices from the research team and sponsors.

  • Operationalizes practices through the use of standard operating procedures, documentation, and quality control checks to ensure the research team is appropriately following the agreed upon practices.

  • Creates procedures to identify potential data problems and communicates with research teams to resolve data problems prior to analysis. - Ensures appropriate steps are taken to preserve point in time version of data based on publication and sponsor requirements.

  • Tracks the location; the compliance, including sponsor, requirements; data use or other agreements; and access requirements associated with each data set and publish in the appropriate location.

  • Understands and determines when and what data must be shared to meet funder and journal sharing requirements and to ensure that the data is shared using FAIR and other data sharing standards.

  • Collaborates with team members to create and maintain trainings and resources on topics such as best practices in data management, data privacy principles and emerging issues, de-identification and anonymization, and translating technical requirements into achievable steps for researchers.

  • Trains research team as well as individuals in the standard operating procedures and practices.

  • Understands the compliance, record retention, and security requirements for the research data and incorporates these requirements and practices into the management of the research data.

  • Coordinates the development of research management plans and ensures that they meet funding and institutional requirements, and are revised as needed during the lifecycle of research projects.

  • In addition, ensures that individuals in the team follow the requirements of the plan.

  • Ability to extract appropriate data values from data sets to contribute to analysis as well as assist with the integration of data into other research.

  • Serves as an expert for standardization of terminology, quality control measures, and domain specific vocabulary.

  • Stays current regarding data sharing requirements of funding agencies and tools for compliance Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience working on a research team with responsibilities associated with data, OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Must have a strong understanding of data management and data quality practices as well as research compliance and data security requirements.

  • Must show expertise or appropriate skill set in translating practices and requirements into actionable, operational plans that are adopted across a diverse team.

NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location. Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
