  • Under the direct supervision of the Director of the Investigational Drug Service (IDS), assists in managing the daily technical functions of IDS which includes all aspects of inventory management, IV compounding and assisting pharmacists in the dispensing process.

  • Assists the Director in orientation and training of IDS Technicians and ensuring that Technicians understand all IDS processes and procedures related to their jobs.

  • Assists in maintaining the daily work schedule for technicians, determining work flow and establishing priorities.

  • Coordinates the MAP program for IDS, assists with monitor visits and completes other assigned tasks.

  • Ensures that technical aspects of the operation are completed according to established IDS SOPs.

  • Prepares, compounds, and distributes drugs issued by the Investigational Drug Service (IDS) for ongoing research studies. Prepares chemotherapy IV doses and non-chemotherapy IV doses in accordance with guidelines of each investigational protocol.

  • Performs aseptic technique assessment for staff and maintains documentation. Coordinates requirements for aseptic technique as it pertains to IDS.

  • Manages drug inventory which includes ordering and receiving investigational agents, conducting cycle counts, checking and processing expired inventory and managing unknown expiration dating.

  • Processes daily shipments from sponsors by receiving inventory in Vestigo, completing paperwork requirements of shipper and receiving shipments in the various IXRS systems.

  • Completes training as required by sponsors in the various IXRS systems and maintains access to all systems used by sponsors.

  • Processes drugs for destruction which includes removal from inventory and completion of destruction paperwork.

  • Documents patient returns by receiving and entering returns in Vestigo.

  • Files paperwork for investigational drug studies which includes patient drug orders, shipping invoices, communication with the sponsor, patient returns, and documentation of drugs returned to the sponsor or destroyed locally.

  • Maintains inventory of IV supplies and other supplies needed for dose preparation and compounding, including supplies that are specific to an investigational protocol which must be ordered directly from the sponsor.

  • Assists in cleaning and maintenance of IV hoods, surrounding work environment, daily temperature checks and recording in SIMPLIFI.

  • Assists in ordering and procurement of equipment necessary to the operation of IDS.

  • Interacts with vendors to secure cost effective, high quality products and services.

  • Assists in planning for and purchasing capital equipment and furnishings.

  • Maintains drug storage equipment to include carousel, refrigerators and freezers and temperature monitoring system.

  • Assists in reporting onsite temperature excursions to sponsors.

  • Works with pharmacist to insure that studies are properly set up in Vestigo, training logs are in place, authorized prescribers are identified and set-ups are complete.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required.


  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Four years of pharmacy technician experience which includes some work in a hospital setting.

  • Some college coursework preferred.

  • Certification as a Hospital Pharmacy Technician by completion of an accredited technician training program or by national exam or current enrollment in an accredited School of Pharmacy.
