Description

The Winship Cancer Tissue and Pathology Shared Resource (CTPSR) seeks a research specialist to support their cancer tissue specimen biobank. This research specialist will work as part of a multidisciplinary team focused on providing high quality biological specimens to investigators for research.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under general supervision, performs a variety of defined research and laboratory tests and experiments according to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules.

  • Sets up experiments as prescribed by a principal investigator.

  • May be required to participate in laboratory maintenance activities such as sterilization and cleaning of equipment, ordering of supplies, inventory and media preparation.

  • Maintains records, files and logs of work performed in laboratory notebooks and computer databases.

  • Compiles data and records results of studies for publications, grants and seminar presentations.

  • Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required by principal investigator.

ADDITIONAL JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Coordinating tissue collections with the Department of Pathology, dissecting and snap-freezing tissue specimens; accessioning human tissue, whole blood, and bone marrow collections into our specimen tracking database; processing blood and bone marrow specimens under aseptic conditions to isolate plasma, serum, PBMC, and other derivatives; cryopreserving and storing specimens; and distributing or shipping specimens to researchers as needed.

  • Other duties may include QC of specimen collections; freezer maintenance, organization, and temperature monitoring; annotation of subjects and specimens in our database; and other activities as defined by management.

  • Strict adherence to SOPs is required to ensure collected specimens are of the highest quality.

  • Close collaboration and coordination with the Emory Department of Pathology team, clinical research teams, Emory investigators and their lab members, and other CTPSR staff is an essential component of this position.

  • The chosen candidate must complete required training modules, demonstrate the knowledge and ability to follow standard processes, conduct and develop interpersonal relationships with professionalism and diplomacy, attend and actively participate in daily lab huddles, and follow the direction of laboratory managers and/or directors.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field

  • OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in a life science

  • relevant laboratory experience.
