We are seeking a highly motivated candidate to join our team as a Research Specialist in the Yerkes NHP Genomics Core. Our group provides next generation sequencing services for scientists at Yerkes and the Emory Vaccine Center, in addition to the wider Emory and external research community. We currently support disease etiology and vaccine development research in a variety of infectious disease systems, including SARS-CoV-2. The successful candidate will receive training in a broad array of techniques such as the preparation of RNAseq libraries, single cell sequencing via droplet capture on the 10X Genomics platform, usage of advanced liquid handling robotics, and sequencing on the Illumina MiSeq and NovaSeq6000 systems. Prior educational background in biology, immunology or molecular biology is required and previous lab experience, particularly in molecular biology or NGS techniques, would be a plus. This position reports directly to Dr. Kathryn Pellegrini.
The Research Specialist will conduct RNA/DNA extractions, prepare next generation sequencing libraries (eg. For RNAseq, microbiome, single cell analysis, WGS, etc), and perform quality control assays.
Under general supervision, performs a variety of defined research and laboratory tests and experiments according to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules.
Sets up experiments as prescribed by a principal investigator.
May be required to participate in laboratory maintenance activities such as sterilization and cleaning of equipment, ordering of supplies, inventory and media preparation.
Maintains records, files and logs of work performed in laboratory notebooks and computer databases.
Compiles data and records results of studies for publications, grants and seminar presentations.
Performs related responsibilities as required by principal investigator.
- Bachelor's degree in a scientific field OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
Experience with molecular biology techniques such as nucleic acid extraction and PCR
The ability to work independently and in a team environment
Outstanding attention to detail
Good written and oral communication skills
Proficiency in basic computer skills
Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents
Work is normally performed in a typical laboratory environment
