Dr. Samuel Sober’s lab in the Department of Biology at Emory University is seeking a Research Specialist with a background in engineering or experience with CAD to conduct biomedical research in neuroscience. The Sober lab combines biomechanical, physiological, behavioral, and computational methods to dissect the biological basis of complex skill learning and motor control in the songbird and rodent model systems. Your role will be to support the ongoing research and development of implantable biosensor technologies. You will be a critical part of a dynamic team that is extending our research to labs across the country and internationally.

This position is well-suited for a candidate looking to gain experience in one or all of the following: biomedical engineering and research, electrical or mechanical engineering, research with rodents and songbirds, product development, user-driven design, or research into how the brain controls complex movements. Applicants will be expected to commit to the position for at least 1 year with extensions possible based on performance, experience, and interest. This position is full-time and supported by NIH and private funding.


  • Under general supervision, performs a variety of defined research and laboratory tests and experiments according to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules

  • Sets up experiments as prescribed by a principal investigator

  • May be required to participate in laboratory maintenance activities such as sterilization and cleaning of equipment, ordering of supplies, inventory and media preparation

  • Maintains records, files and logs of work performed in laboratory notebooks and computer databases

  • Compiles data and records results of studies for publications, grants and seminar presentations

  • Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents

  • Performs related responsibilities as required by principal investigator


  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training


  • Experience performing research in a biology or engineering lab is preferred

  • Familiarity with electrophysiology, soldering, or microscope use is favorable

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required as is the ability to work as part of a team and with collaborators

NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location. Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employees
