The Department of Epidemiology, Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University seeks a data analyst who will have the opportunity to work on several collaborative studies that partner with the Georgia Center for Cancer Statistics using public health and healthcare data for behavioral, social and molecular cancer epidemiology. Based on skills, knowledge, abilities, and interests, the candidate would have the option to work on projects ranging from multilevel and spatial analyses to epigenome-wide association studies and analysis of tumor biomarkers in the context of behavioral factors and social stressors across the life-course. The candidate is expected to increase their methodological and substantive knowledge of cancer, social and molecular epidemiology; build skills for developing and implementing research studies; and potentially teach and mentor trainees and other staff in support of the Emory academic and research missions.
The analyst will perform population health research activities, including developing and implementing analytical protocols, performing data analyses, preparing methodology and data interpretation narratives for manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals, assisting in developing grant proposals, generating reports, and providing other research and methodological support for existing and ongoing studies. Responsibilities include creating Microsoft Access databases derived from multiple data sources using SAS/R/SQL coding designed with quantitative and qualitative methods for descriptive, exploratory, causal, predictive, and inferential analyses. These analyses will support the development of predictive algorithms for cancer recurrence. The candidate will be working closely with team members and should be capable of working independently as well as with scientific teams of diverse disciplines.
The analyst will work under the guidance of the principal investigators and will have the opportunity to collaborate with study investigators in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Oncology. The Georgia Center for Cancer Statistics allows telecommuting for this position; however, the ideal candidate will reside within the Atlanta area, as some onsite work is required.Supports the acquisition, management and analysis of data from multiple sites or sources. Supports the configuration and management of technology solutions supporting the receipt, transformation, validation and storage of data. Ensures that the uses of data through reports and queries are appropriate.
This role is based at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia that currently offers remote work temporarily during the COVID-19 pandemic, with intent to return to an Emory University facility in the future that may include a hybrid of on-campus and remote work. Emory reserves the right to change this status with notice. The position is available for immediate start.
Serves as an organizational consultant on matters relating to databases by providing expertise to assist users in meeting their needs.
Develops automated quality control procedures to assess quality of data and provides reports to data owners.
Works effectively within a group setting in areas of design of data collection instruments, database management, analysis of data, and creation of reports and dashboards.
Develops and performs appropriate analyses.
Provides explanations of analysis methods, assumptions made, and assists in interpretation of results and implications therein.
Documents methods and results through development and maintenance of standard documentation artifacts including data dictionaries, standard operating procedures and analysis methodology descriptions.
Works with onsite or field-based counterparts to coordinate consistent implementation of data quality control measures and provision of access to the central data repositories.
Performs related responsibilities as assigned.
A bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, and three years of experience in processes and standards related to data, OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Experience with relational database management systems such as, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL preferred.
Experience with statistical packages such as, SAS, SPSS, R preferred.
Masters degree in Epidemiology, Biostatistics or other relevant quantitative fields.
Expertise in data management and analyses using SAS, R, SQL, Microsoft Access/Excel is criticalfor success in this role.
Expertise in working with and developing data analysis strategies for large datasets; preferenceto those individuals who have experience with healthcare administrative/billing data such asMedicaid/Medicare.
Demonstrated experience in hierarchical or multilevel modeling.
Demonstrated experience in spatial/econometric modeling (ArcGIS, SpaceStat, ClusterSeer).
Experience with natural language processing methods.
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to foster strong working relationships with varyinglevels of stakeholders.
Demonstrated experience with publishable, peer-reviewed scientific writing that includesdocumenting methodological and analytical approaches.
